The MGB GT V8 rear suspension is a live axle on semi-elliptic leaf springs, the simple, robust arrangement used across the MGB range. Two leaf springs run longitudinally, attached to the bodyshell at the front via fixed brackets and at the rear via shackles that allow the spring to lengthen and shorten as it flexes. The rear axle is mounted to the springs by U-bolts at each side, with damping provided by lever-arm dampers acting on arms connected to the axle.
Leaf Springs
The leaf springs on the V8 are GT-length items based on the standard MGB GT specification, with a slightly higher load rating to suit the V8's greater weight. The springs comprise multiple leaves of varying length, with progressive stiffness as deflection increases. Springs settle over time and tired rear springs cause the car to sag at the rear, with reduced ride height and reduced rebound travel. Renewal as a pair is good practice when the rear suspension is being serviced.
Lever-Arm Dampers and Arms
Rear lever-arm dampers are mounted to the bodyshell, with arms extending down to connect to the rear axle. The damper bodies are filled with hydraulic fluid; internal valving controls damping characteristics. Lever-arm dampers age internally, seals deteriorate, fluid leaks past pistons, and damping characteristics drift. Rebuild kits are available for some specifications, with complete reconditioned units available alongside.
Spring Shackles and U-Bolts
Spring shackles at the rear of each leaf spring allow the spring to extend and contract as it flexes. The shackles include rubber bushes that isolate the spring from the bodyshell. U-bolts secure the axle to the springs, with locking plates and fixings that should be renewed during any axle work.
Bump Stops
Rubber bump stops limit upward axle travel under heavy compression, preventing damage to suspension and bodyshell when the car bottoms out on rough surfaces. Bump stops perish in service and should be inspected regularly.
MGOC Spares
MGOC Spares supplies rear leaf springs, lever-arm dampers, damper arms, spring shackles, U-bolts, bump stops and all associated rear suspension components for the MGB GT V8.
