The MGB GT V8 washer system uses a plastic washer bottle mounted in the engine bay, with a bracket securing the bottle to a chassis or bodyshell mounting point. Original specification bottles vary by production date, early V8s used one bottle style; later cars used a revised specification.
Replacement bottles in original styles are available, with brackets and mounting hardware.
Washer Pump
On most V8 specifications, an electric pump in the bottle (or in the supply line from the bottle) draws washer fluid through the hose to the jets at the front of the windscreen scuttle. The pump is operated from the dashboard washer switch or stalk-mounted control. Pump motors fail with age and contamination; replacement pumps fit the original bottle and supply line.
Washer Hose
Plastic or rubber washer hose runs from the pump to the washer jets, typically routed through the bonnet or scuttle area. Hose ageing causes cracks and leaks that reduce washer pressure at the jets. Hose renewal is straightforward and inexpensive during washer service.
Washer Jets
Washer jets at the front of the windscreen scuttle direct the washer fluid onto the windscreen for clearing road dirt and bug deposits. Jet aim should be set to direct the fluid onto the upper area of the wiper sweep so the wipers carry it down the windscreen, incorrect aim causes the fluid to hit either too high (above the wiper sweep) or too low (below the windscreen entirely).
Service
Washer system service includes checking the bottle for cracks and leaks, testing pump operation, inspecting the hose for splits, cleaning blocked jets (a common fault as small particles in the washer fluid can clog the jet apertures), and adjusting jet aim. Modern washer fluid with detergent additives improves cleaning effectiveness.
