The standard MGB front brakes use solid 10.75-inch discs with Lockheed twin-piston calipers. While this system performs well for normal road use, owners who drive hard, use their car on track days, or have increased engine output through modifications will benefit from one of the uprated brake kits available, each offering a different level of improvement to match the intended use and budget.
4-Pot Vented Brake Conversion
The 4-pot vented brake conversion kit is the most significant front brake upgrade available for the MGB and has been developed exclusively by MGOC Spares. The conversion replaces both the standard solid discs and the original twin-piston calipers with a fundamentally superior system. Vented discs use an internal air channel between two braking surfaces, dissipating heat far more effectively than solid discs, this dramatically reduces the risk of brake fade during sustained hard use and extends disc and pad life. The four-piston caliper delivers substantially greater and more even clamping force across a larger pad contact area than the original Lockheed two-piston unit, providing shorter stopping distances and a firmer, more progressive pedal feel.
The 4-pot vented conversion is available in two specifications. The cast iron caliper version provides the performance improvement as an accessible alternative. The aluminium caliper version offers the same braking performance with significantly reduced unsprung weight, lighter calipers improve suspension response and reduce the load on the wheel bearings. A wheel spacer kit is available for four-stud steel wheel and Rostyle applications where additional clearance is needed behind the wheel.
EBC X25 Brake Kit
The EBC X25 brake kit takes a different approach, working within the standard caliper but with substantially uprated components. The kit combines slotted and dimpled discs that are 25 per cent thicker than standard with EBC Green Stuff Kevlar pads offering 25 per cent increased surface area. The greater disc mass absorbs and dissipates more heat before fade occurs, and the increased pad area spreads the braking force more evenly, extending pad life while improving stopping power. This is the ideal kit for owners who want a meaningful performance improvement without changing the calipers.
EBC Disc & Pad Kit
The EBC disc and pad kit pairs Green Stuff Kevlar pads with slotted and dimpled discs at standard dimensions, providing maximum braking efficiency from the standard caliper and hub assembly without any increase in disc thickness. This is the most straightforward uprated kit to fit and is well suited to fast road use where improved pad compound and disc gas evacuation are the priority.
When fitting any uprated brake kit, the brake fluid should be renewed and the system fully bled. New pads require a bedding-in period of moderate braking for the first fifty miles to allow the friction material to establish full contact with the disc surface.
