MGF & TF Hubs

Clutch, Gearbox & Drivetrain > Hubs

This section groups together the suspension arms, hub carriers, wheel hubs, and rear anti-roll bar components that sit at the junction between the suspension and the drivetrain. These are the items that locate each wheel, carry the drive shaft output at the rear, and provide the bolting point for the brake disc and road wheel. Pure suspension items, springs, dampers, Hydragas displacers, and subframe components, are covered separately under the Suspension & Steering section; the arms and hubs are placed here alongside the drive shafts because they share the same physical corner of the car and are typically serviced together. Three Child Pages, The Front-Common / Rear-Split Structure This parent divides into three child pages that reflect the fundamental difference between MGF and MG TF rear suspension: Front Arms & Hubs carries the front lower arms, hub carriers, wheel hubs, and front bearings that are common between MGF and MG TF. The front suspension geometry, double wishbones with the K-series engine ahead of the cabin firewall, was carried across from MGF to MG TF with only minor revisions, so the front arm and hub items are largely shared. Confirm model and production date when ordering specific items, but the broad structural commonality makes this a single product page for both models. Rear Arms, Hubs & Roll Bar - MGF covers the MGF-specific rear suspension arm and hub arrangement appropriate to the Hydragas interconnected fluid-and-gas suspension system. The MGF's rear suspension uses control arms that locate the hub carrier against the Hydragas displacer's reaction force, a geometry specific to the Hydragas system and not shared with the MG TF. The rear anti-roll bar, where fitted, is also MGF-specific for this reason. Rear Arms, Hubs & Roll Bar - MG TF covers the MG TF-specific rear suspension arm and hub arrangement appropriate to the coil-spring-and-damper multi-link rear suspension introduced for the 2002 model transition. The MG TF's rear suspension was redesigned from first principles around the coil-and-damper format, with multi-link geometry and stiffer bushings intended to complement the approximately 20% torsionally stiffer MG TF bodyshell. The MG TF rear arms, hubs, and anti-roll bar are not interchangeable with MGF items despite the two cars sharing a common platform architecture. Why the Rear Split Matters When Ordering The single most common mistake when ordering rear suspension and hub parts for these cars is assuming MGF/MG TF commonality and ordering an item from the wrong model's catalogue page. The cars look similar from the outside and share many mechanical components, but the rear suspension is one of the areas where the two models diverge most sharply. Always confirm the model (MGF or MG TF) as the first step when ordering any rear arm, rear hub, or rear anti-roll bar item, and use the model-specific child page accordingly. The visual difference is unmistakable once identified: an MGF rear suspension has no exposed coil spring at each corner (the Hydragas displacer is hidden within the suspension tower); an MG TF rear suspension has a clearly visible coil spring and damper unit at each rear corner. Hub Bearing Kit, Common Across Front and Rear One useful simplification: the hub bearing kit itself (the inner bearing, stake nut, and circlip) is common across front and rear axles on both models, the same bearing kit fits every corner of every MGF and MG TF. This makes hub bearing replacement a single-item ordering decision regardless of which corner is being serviced. The hub-bearing kit is covered in detail on both the Front Arms & Hubs child page and the two Rear Arms child pages. Drive Shaft Interface On the rear hubs, the drive shaft CV joint is retained by a stake nut that must never be reused once disturbed, it is a one-shot crimp-locking fastener that forms its locking feature against the hub spline on first tightening. A fresh stake nut is included in every hub bearing kit. Do not undertake rear hub work without having a replacement stake nut on hand; reusing the old nut leaves the drive shaft effectively unsecured. Workshop Reality Suspension arm and hub work on the MGF and MG TF is largely within the scope of a competent home mechanic with reasonable workshop equipment. The front arms and hubs are accessible with the road wheel removed and modest suspension disassembly. The rear arms and hubs require slightly more involvement on the MGF (working around the Hydragas system) than on the MG TF (working with conventional coil-and-damper hardware), but neither is subframe-out work in most cases. The individual child pages carry the practical detail for each sub-assembly.
