The MGF and MG TF instrument cluster exists in two fundamental forms either side of the XD511059 / MY2000 production breakpoint. Pre-MY2000 MGFs use a cream-faced cluster with cable-driven speedometer, the drive cable runs from a gearbox-mounted speedometer drive through the bulkhead to the back of the cluster. From MY2000 onwards (VIN XD511059), the cluster was redesigned with a silver face, and the speedometer signal was converted to an electronic feed from a gearbox-mounted speed transducer, no cable, no mechanical drive. This electronic arrangement continued through all MG TF production.
Owners ordering cluster components, speedometer drives, or replacement speedos therefore need to know which side of the XD511059 breakpoint their car sits on.
