MGF & TF Wiring Looms

Electrics > Wiring Looms

The main wiring harness on MGF and MG TF cars is not a single part, over 200 distinct main harness variations were fitted to MGF and MG TF production between 1995 and 2005, reflecting the combinations of engine, transmission, market specification, and options that each car could be built with. Like most modern cars, almost every system is electrically or electronically controlled, so any significant specification change required a different harness. MGOC Spares does not stock all 200+ variations as standard inventory, instead, the main harness is supplied on a quote-on-request basis: the customer provides the car's specific details, MGOC Spares confirms availability with MG parts suppliers, and a quote is returned before ordering. The same approach applies to the approximately 50 engine harness variations. Availability has reduced over the years since the 2008 catalogue was written; some variants are no longer obtainable, others remain in stock at MG Rover parts successors. MGF Main Harness Ordering Checklist For an MGF main harness enquiry, the following details should be supplied: chassis (VIN) number; model (1800, 1800 VVC, Trophy, or 1600); right or left hand drive; special market requirements (Japan or Australia); manual or automatic gearbox; shift lock fitted on automatic gear lever (if applicable); manual or power steering; air conditioning fitted; anti-lock brakes fitted; high level brake light fitted; and seat belt warning device fitted. The EPAS-or-not distinction is relevant only for MGF because some early MGFs were produced without EPAS; every MG TF has EPAS as standard. MG TF Main Harness Ordering Checklist The MG TF checklist is shorter because more options were standardised from launch: chassis (VIN) number; right or left hand drive; manual or automatic gearbox; shift lock fitted on automatic gear lever (if applicable); air conditioning fitted; anti-lock brakes fitted; seat belt warning device fitted; and twin fog lamps fitted. Power steering is not asked because MG TF always has EPAS, and the high-level brake light is not asked because it became standard by MG TF. For engine harness enquiries on MG TF from VIN YD530689 onwards, the dual mode air intake system fitment is an additional question. Sub-Harnesses Available From Stock Several sub-harnesses are catalogued as discrete parts and are generally more readily available than the full main harness. The fuel injector harness is catalogued in four variants: MGF 1.8 non-VVC pre-YD522572, MGF 1.8 non-VVC post-YD522573 / 1.6 / MG TF (shared part), MGF VVC pre-YD522572, and MGF VVC post-YD522573 (which shares the post-YD522573 non-VVC specification). The fascia harness is catalogued in six variants across MGF to XD511058, MGF from XD511059 (shared manual and automatic from YD522573), MGF automatic to YD522572, MG TF to 4D620548, and MG TF from 4D620549. The airbag harness is catalogued in two variants, with and without the seat-belt warning device fitted, plus handed LH and RH link harnesses for driver's airbag, passenger's airbag, and seat-belt pretensioner, introduced from MGF VIN YD522573 and continuing through MG TF. An air conditioning harness is catalogued for MGF to XD511058. Tie wraps for the engine harness and harness clips for the airbag harness are catalogued for service replacement. Common Wiring Fault Patterns The most common wiring faults on MGF and MG TF are corroded earth points producing intermittent multi-system faults (covered on Battery & Cables page), chafed insulation where looms pass through bulkheads producing short or open circuits, and connector corrosion at engine bay positions exposed to heat and moisture. Engine bay connectors should be inspected and treated with electrical contact cleaner and dielectric grease during any engine bay work. Age-related insulation degradation on engine bay wiring, particularly near the exhaust manifold, is worth checking on higher-mileage cars, where brittle insulation can contribute to intermittent faults that resist standard diagnosis. Full main harness replacement is a major undertaking; where the fault is localised, replacing the affected sub-harness from this page is often the more practical route.
