Upgraded Exhaust Fixings

Exhaust fasteners lead a hard life on any car, but on the MGF and MG TF they sit in a hot, exposed mid-engine bay and underbody where standard plated steel nuts, studs and clamps corrode and seize. Anyone who has tried to remove an original manifold-to-downpipe nut after years of service knows how easily they shear. Upgraded exhaust fixings, in stainless steel and uprated specifications, are offered so that a new system can be fitted cleanly and, just as importantly, removed again without drama when the time comes. Fitting fresh fixings whenever the exhaust is disturbed is good practice; re-using corroded fasteners is a false economy that often ends in broken studs and damaged threads. What the Range Covers The exhaust fixings catalogued for the MGF and MG TF span the full length of the system. At the head, locking nuts secure the manifold, and a manifold gasket seals it to the downpipe. The downpipe joint uses a gasket that differs by manifold type, the four-stud arrangement on early MGF 1800 cars up to VIN YD522572, and the six-stud arrangement on later MGF, the MGF 1600 and all MG TF, so the correct gasket and the appropriate number of manifold-to-downpipe nuts must be matched to the car. Further back, the catalytic converter is sealed by its own gaskets and held by nuts to the exhaust system, the silencer is carried on a hanger bracket with its own securing nuts, and the mounting rubbers are retained by clamps and screws. A complete exhaust system fitting kit is available to gather the necessary fasteners and seals for a full installation in one part. Model and Production Differences The single most important distinction here is the four-stud versus six-stud manifold-to-downpipe joint. Early MGF 1800 cars to YD522572 use the four-stud type; from YD522573 onwards, together with the 1600 and every MG TF, the six-stud joint is used, and the downpipe gasket and the quantity of securing nuts change accordingly. Confirming the car's VIN against this breakpoint, or simply counting the studs on the existing joint, ensures the right gasket and nut count are ordered. Most other fixings, silencer bracket nuts, mounting rubber clamps and the catalytic converter hardware, are common across the range. Ordering Guidance When fitting a new or stainless exhaust, the complete fitting kit is usually the simplest route, supplying the gaskets and fasteners needed in one go. For partial work, identify the specific joint being disturbed and match the gasket to the four-stud or six-stud manifold type. Pairing upgraded stainless fixings with polyurethane exhaust mountings gives a corrosion-resistant, durable installation throughout, which is well worth doing on a system intended to last the life of the car.
