MGF & TF Front Anti Roll Bars

Suspension & Steering > Front Suspension > Front Anti Roll Bars

The front anti-roll bar is one of the specific detail differences between MGF and MG TF that directly affects handling balance. The MGF uses a 19mm front anti-roll bar as standard across the range, while the MG TF uses a 20mm bar as part of the 2002 suspension re-engineering programme. The thicker MG TF bar works in conjunction with the revised front geometry (reduced camber, parallel tracking) and stiffer bodyshell to reduce body roll and sharpen turn-in without compromising ride quality. Anti-Roll Bar, Four Production Variants The front anti-roll bar itself exists in four specifications. The MGF has a single anti-roll bar specification used across the entire MGF range. The MG TF has three production variants with breakpoints at VINs 3D617816 and 5D640464, an original MG TF bar fitted to VIN 3D617816, a revised bar from VIN 3D617817 to 5D640464, and a further revised bar from VIN 5D640465 onwards. Later MG TF anti-roll bars can replace earlier ones as a service substitution, but only when the link assemblies and mounting bushes are also updated to the later specifications, the three components work as a set and mixing generations produces poor fit and compromised behaviour. Link Assemblies, Handed, Unhanded, and Upgrade The anti-roll bar link assembly connects each end of the bar to the lower wishbone. The MGF and early MG TF (to VIN 3D617816) use handed link assemblies, separate LH and RH items that are not interchangeable. From VIN 3D617817 onwards, MG TF link assemblies transitioned to unhanded design, a single link part number used on both sides, simplifying service. The later unhanded link is a required component whenever an earlier MG TF anti-roll bar is replaced with the later specification. A dedicated upgrade link pair is catalogued for MG TF owners seeking improved response without full 85th Anniversary specification, a firmer link assembly that reduces the rubber-bush hysteresis of the standard items. A separate 85th Anniversary link is catalogued for owners either maintaining a genuine MG TF 85th Anniversary (2008) or replicating its chassis specification on another MG TF, the 85th Anniversary used ball-jointed links (TRW-sourced) in place of the rubber-bushed items, eliminating bush compliance and hysteresis for more precise turn-in response. Mounting Bushes, Rubber Standard and Polyurethane Upgrade The anti-roll bar is mounted to the front subframe via rubber bushes held in clamp brackets. The rubber mounting bushes exist in two production specifications: an earlier bush fitted to MGF and MG TF to VIN 3D617816, and a later bush from VIN 3D617817 onwards matching the revised anti-roll bar and link specifications. A polyurethane upgrade bush is catalogued for owners seeking greater wear resistance and more precise bar location, polyurethane eliminates the gradual softening of rubber bushes over time and provides more consistent roll-stiffness through the bar's life. The trade-off is slightly more road noise and vibration transmission into the cabin. Clamp Brackets and Hardware The anti-roll bar clamp brackets retain the mounting bushes against the subframe and are common to MGF and MG TF. The brackets bolt to the subframe with specified screws; all associated fasteners (link-to-bar bolts, link-to-wishbone bolts, bracket screws, and flanged M10 retaining nuts) are individually catalogued for renewal during anti-roll bar service. Diagnosing Anti-Roll Bar Issues Worn anti-roll bar components are a common MOT advisory and failure item on both MGF and MG TF. The symptoms are distinctive: clunking or knocking from the front over bumps and during low-speed manoeuvring, more pronounced on one side than the other when the car is driven over an uneven surface. The rubber bushes in the mounting brackets perish with age and road salt exposure, and the link ball joints (or rubber bushes on non-ball-jointed links) develop play with use. A physical inspection with the car jacked at the front, rocking the anti-roll bar by hand and looking for movement at the link ends and the mounting bush locations, identifies worn components accurately. Renewal of bushes, links, and clamp brackets as a complete set restores the original roll control and eliminates the associated noise.
