Midget Bootlid & Fixings

Bodywork > Bootlid & Fixings

The boot lid is a hinged pressed-steel panel providing access to the boot compartment, which houses the fuel tank, spare wheel, and any luggage. The boot lid assembly, outer skin, hinges, seals, stays, lock, and all associated hardware are available for renewal. Boot Lid Assembly and Outer Skin A complete boot lid assembly is available for cars where the lid has corroded beyond repair or been damaged. Where only the outer face of the lid has deteriorated but the inner frame remains sound, a boot lid outer skin provides a more economical repair, the skin is bonded and folded over the existing inner frame, avoiding the need to transfer the lock, hinges, and stay from one lid to another. Boot Lid Seal The boot lid seal sits in a channel around the boot aperture and prevents water from entering the boot when the lid is closed. Two seal specifications were used: an earlier type fitted from GAN4 through to approximately GAN6-183739, and a later type from GAN6-183740 onward. A perished or compressed seal allows rainwater to enter the boot, which runs directly onto the fuel tank, battery tray, and boot floor, all areas highly vulnerable to corrosion. The seal should be renewed if it no longer springs back when compressed or if it has hardened and cracked. Boot Lid Hinges Boot lid hinges are handed left and right and secured to both the boot lid and the rear deck by screws and spring washers. The hinges should be checked for wear and lubricated at every service, a worn hinge allows the boot lid to sit unevenly when closed, compromising the seal. Boot Stay Two boot stay types were used: a rigid stay rod on earlier cars and a telescopic gas-assisted stay on later production. The telescopic stay is a popular upgrade for cars originally fitted with the rigid rod, as it holds the boot lid securely at any opening angle without the need to prop it manually. A stowage clip holds the rigid stay rod against the boot interior when the lid is closed. Boot Lock and Buffers The boot lock and handle assembly is mounted centrally on the boot lid. Matched three-piece lock sets sharing a single key with both door locks are available for owners who want a single key for the entire car, these are covered in the Door Locks section. Rubber buffers are fitted at the front and rear edges of the boot lid opening, cushioning the lid when closed and preventing metal-to-metal contact. The front buffers sit on the rear deck and the rear buffers on the boot floor lip.
