The Midget 1500 (GAN6, 1974 to 1979) was fitted with the Triumph 1493cc engine and a cooling system specific to that installation. The radiator, hoses, and mounting arrangement differ from the earlier A-Series cars, as the Triumph engine has its water pump, thermostat housing, and outlet positions in different locations. The cooling components for the 1500 must therefore be ordered specifically for this model.
1500cc Radiator
The 1500 radiator is matched to the Triumph engine's cooling requirements and to the rubber-bumper bodyshell. The hose connection points are positioned to suit the Triumph engine's water pump and thermostat housing, which sit differently from the A-Series unit. Because the Triumph engine shares no components with the A-Series, the radiator and its mountings are unique to the 1500.
Hoses and Bypass
The top and bottom hoses connect the radiator to the Triumph engine's thermostat outlet and water pump inlet, with a bypass hose maintaining circulation while the thermostat is closed. These hoses are shaped specifically for the 1500 installation and are not interchangeable with the A-Series hoses, so they must be matched to the Triumph-engined car.
Pressure Cap and Clips
The pressure cap must be of the correct rating for the 1500 system to maintain the proper boiling point and prevent coolant loss. Hose clips secure each connection and are renewed alongside the hoses, as worn clips cause slow seepage that is easily overlooked until coolant level drops.
Ordering Considerations
Confirm the car is the 1500 model with the Triumph engine before ordering, as the cooling components differ entirely from the A-Series cars. Order the top, bottom, and bypass hoses with new clips together as a set.
Note that the Triumph engine cooling layout is distinct, so A-Series radiators and hoses will not fit the 1500.
