Ignition service kits contain the contact breaker points, condenser, rotor arm, and distributor cap needed for a routine ignition system service. All four items are consumables that wear during normal operation and should be renewed at the intervals specified in the workshop manual, typically every 6,000 miles or annually, whichever comes first.
Ignition Service Kits Identification
Kits are specific to the distributor type: the 25D4 for 1275cc engines and the 45D4 for 1500cc engines. The two distributors use different caps (side-entry versus top-entry), different point sets, and different rotor arms. Ordering the correct kit by distributor type ensures all components are compatible.
Contact Breaker Points
The contact breaker points are the most critical item in the kit. As the fibre heel on the points wears against the distributor cam, the points gap closes progressively, retarding the ignition timing and reducing the spark energy. This causes increasingly difficult starting, loss of power, and deteriorating fuel economy. Renewing the points at the correct interval prevents this progressive deterioration.
The condenser absorbs the electrical energy that would otherwise arc across the points as they open, preventing point burning and radio interference. A failing condenser causes misfiring and eventually a complete loss of spark.
For owners who prefer to eliminate the need for regular points renewal, an electronic ignition conversion provides a maintenance-free alternative.
