Midget Lighting Upgrades

Electrics > Lighting Upgrades

The original sealed-beam and tungsten-filament lighting fitted to the Midget was adequate for the traffic conditions of its era but falls well short of modern expectations, particularly on unlit roads. Lighting upgrades range from a straightforward bulb change to a full halogen conversion with uprated wiring and relays. Most upgrades are reversible and retain the standard lamp housings, preserving originality while transforming night-time visibility. Headlamp Conversions Early Midgets used sealed-beam headlamp units in which the bulb and reflector are a single sealed assembly, when the filament fails, the entire unit is replaced. A halogen conversion replaces the sealed beam with a separate reflector unit and a replaceable H4 halogen bulb, giving a noticeably brighter, whiter beam and the convenience of changing only the bulb in future. Both right-hand-drive and left-hand-drive beam patterns are available, and the conversion fits within the original headlamp bowl and chrome rim, so the external appearance is unchanged. Relay Upgrades Older wiring and the original switchgear were never designed to carry the current drawn by higher-output halogen bulbs, and routing full headlamp current through the dash switch causes voltage drop and eventual switch failure. A headlamp relay kit takes the heavy current directly from the battery to the lamps, with the original switch used only to trigger the relays. This delivers the full rated brightness to the bulbs and protects the original switchgear, and is strongly recommended whenever uprated headlamp bulbs are fitted. LED Bulb Upgrades LED replacement bulbs are available for the side, tail, indicator, number plate, and interior lamps. LEDs draw far less current, illuminate instantly, and last considerably longer than the original tungsten bulbs. Because LEDs draw less current, fitting LED indicator bulbs may require a load-compensating resistor or an electronic flasher unit to maintain the correct flash rate, as the reduced load otherwise causes rapid flashing. Bulb fitment depends on whether the car has a positive-earth or negative-earth electrical system, so the polarity must be confirmed before ordering, as many LED bulbs are polarity sensitive. Ordering Considerations The earliest Midgets were positive earth, changing to negative earth during production, and this distinction is critical for any electronic lighting component. Confirm the bayonet or festoon fitting of each lamp position, as side, tail, and indicator bulbs differ. When upgrading headlamps and side lamps together, plan the relay and wiring upgrade as part of the same job to gain the full benefit safely.
