The OE exhaust systems section covers the standard mild steel replacement systems, manufactured from 18-gauge heavy-duty steel with a manufacturer's guarantee. Each system type comprises a front pipe (connecting to the exhaust manifold), one or more silencer sections, and the associated brackets, clamps, and mountings. Selecting the correct system for the car's chassis number range is essential, as the front pipe joint type, silencer arrangement, and mounting positions vary between the four OE specifications.
Type 1 System (1967 to 1969)
The Type 1 single-box system was fitted to right-hand drive 1275cc cars from 1967 to 1969. It consists of a front pipe and a single silencer. The front pipe connects to the bell-type manifold via a flared joint secured by a clamp, and the system is supported by a gearbox-mounted bracket with a strap, an intermediate mounting, and the main system clamps.
Type 2 System (1970 to 1972)
The Type 2 twin-box system was fitted to UK right-hand drive cars from 1970 to 1972 and to European left-hand drive cars from 1967 to 1972. It uses the same flared front pipe connection as the Type 1 but has a resonator and silencer section rather than a single box. The rear of the system is supported by mounting brackets bolted to the boot floor on both left and right sides, with the system joints secured by clamps.
Type 3 System (1973 to 1974)
The Type 3 twin-box system (1973 to 1974) introduced the three-stud flanged front pipe connection, with an olive sealing the joint between the manifold and front pipe. The rear mounting arrangement is similar to the Type 2 but with revised bracket positions. This system requires manifold-specific fixings including special nuts for the flanged joint, and the olive must be renewed whenever the joint is disturbed.
Type 4 System (1500)
The Type 4 system (1975 to 1979) uses a downpipe from the cast iron 1500 manifold sealed by a gasket rather than a flared or olive joint. The rear pipe includes a resonator and silencer section. The mounting brackets changed during production: early cars used one bracket configuration, with a revision at chassis number GAN6-200001 (August 1977) and a further silencer rear mounting change at GAN6-169792 (November 1975). Fitting kits are specified by chassis number range to account for these changes.
Fitting Kits
Dedicated fitting kits are available for each system type, containing all the clamps, rubber bushes, distance tubes, insulation washers, and fixings needed for installation. These kits are specifically tailored to the system and chassis number range, so both must be quoted when ordering. Renewing the complete fitting kit when installing a replacement exhaust is strongly recommended, as reusing worn or corroded mountings will significantly reduce the life of the new system and lead to premature joint failure from vibration.
