Classic Mini Carburettor & Injection System

Fuel > Carburettor & Injection System

The Classic Mini used three distinct fuel delivery systems across production, and every component in this category is specific to one system type. Before ordering any carburettor or injection component, you must identify which system is fitted to your car. The three types are: SU HS4 or HIF carburettor (up to 1994 on UK cars), single point injection or SPi (1991 to 1996, continuing to 1999 on Japanese export models), and multi-point injection or MPi (1997 to 2000). If you are unsure which system your car has, the simplest visual check is whether there is a conventional round air filter housing on top of the engine (carburettor), a rectangular air filter box with a single injector throttle body (SPi), or a rectangular air filter box with a fuel rail carrying two injectors (MPi). SU HS4 Carburettor The SU HS4 Capstat carburettor was the standard fitment on all small bore engines (848cc, 998cc and 1098cc) from 1976 to 1992, and on the 1275cc 1275 GT up to 1980. The Capstat type is recognisable from earlier non-Capstat HS4 designs by a large diameter metal cap crimped onto the plastic body of the jet. Metering needles varied across engine sizes and production dates, the 848cc used needle type ADH, the 998cc used ADE (1976 to 1982) or AAC (1982 to 1992), the 1098cc used ABP, and the 1275 GT used ABB. Each needle is calibrated for its specific engine’s compression ratio and airflow characteristics, and fitting the wrong needle will cause the engine to run either too rich or too lean. SU HIF44 and HIF38 Carburettors The 1275cc Cooper from 1990 to 1991 used a single SU HIF44 carburettor, while non-Cooper 1275cc models from 1992 to 1994 used the smaller SU HIF38. The HIF (Horizontal Integral Float) design incorporated the float chamber within the carburettor body, replacing the separate side-mounted bowl of the HS4. Cooper and non-Cooper 1275cc carburettors used different metering needles, BFY for the Cooper and AEM for the non-Cooper, calibrated for their respective compression ratios of 10.1:1 and 9.4:1. A blank identification tag is included with replacement carburettors, requiring the carburettor number to be stamped on before fitting. Carburettor induction ended on UK-market Minis in August 1994 when SPi was adopted across the range. Single Point Injection, SPi The SPi system, fitted from 1991 to 1996 on all markets and continuing to 1999 on Japanese export models, uses a single injector mounted in a throttle body assembly bolted to the inlet manifold via a spacer. Key components include a stepper motor controlling idle speed, a throttle position potentiometer providing information to the engine management system, and a pressure temperature compensator heater. The throttle body, injector, stepper motor and potentiometer are all specific to the SPi system and are not interchangeable with MPi equivalents. Multi-Point Injection, MPi The MPi system was introduced in 1997 and remained in production to the end of the Classic Mini in 2000. It uses two injectors mounted on a fuel rail and regulator assembly, controlled by the Rover MEMS 2J engine management system. The MPi system also introduced direct electronic ignition, eliminating the distributor entirely, the distributor housing was physically removed from the cylinder block, oil galleries were redesigned and the oil filter relocated. The original throttle body was a plastic 48mm unit. The MGOC Spares range includes an improved alloy body type in both standard 48mm and uprated 52mm diameters. The MPi stepper motor and throttle position potentiometer are specific to MPi and not interchangeable with SPi components. MGOC Spares Range The MGOC Spares Classic Mini carburettor and injection range covers SU carburettors and complete rebuild kits for HS4, HIF44 and HIF38 types, metering needles for all engine variants, jets, jet bearing kits, float kits, throttle disc kits, throttle spindle kits, dashpot pistons, springs, choke components, SPi throttle bodies and injectors, MPi throttle bodies in standard and uprated sizes, fuel rail and regulator assemblies, MPi injectors, O-ring kits, stepper motors, potentiometers and all associated gaskets and fixings.
