The MG TD and MG TF steering wheel section covers both the original factory-specification wheels and the extensive range of aftermarket alternatives that allow owners to personalise the driving position and appearance of their car. The catalogue is split between two sub-sections: original-equipment wheels and centrepieces for owners maintaining factory specification, and aftermarket wheels and bosses for owners adopting a smaller-diameter or different-style wheel.
Original Specification
The original TD and TF steering wheel sits at the heart of the cockpit and is a defining visual element of the dashboard's period appearance. The original-style centrepiece assembly with its securing screw is catalogued for owners restoring the factory look. Full detail on the original wheel and its supporting components is covered in the OE Steering Wheels sub-section.
Aftermarket Alternatives
A wide range of aftermarket steering wheels is catalogued, suited to owners who prefer a smaller diameter for improved cockpit access, more direct steering feel, or a different rim style. Moto Lita wood and leather wheels are available in 13", 14", and 15" diameters, with both flat and dished spoke configurations on the larger sizes, dished spokes bring the wheel closer to the driver. A walnut-rimmed Moto Lita variant is also catalogued. A reproduction of the 1960s competition wheel with machine-turned spokes is offered as a period motorsport-style option.
Full detail on the aftermarket range, boss kits, and wheel centres is covered in the Aftermarket Steering Wheels & Bosses sub-section.
Boss Kit Requirement
All aftermarket steering wheels require a boss kit specific to the wheel brand and matched to the TD/TF steering column spline. The boss provides the mechanical connection between the wheel and the column, and on cars where the centre carries a horn push function, the electrical contact for the horn. A specific note on horn function: many aftermarket wheel centres include a horn push pad, but on the TD and TF this function is inoperative because the horn circuit on these cars uses a separate dashboard-mounted (TD) or scuttle-mounted (TF) horn push, not a contact through the steering column. Owners fitting an aftermarket wheel retain the original separate horn push location.
Note on the Wood-Rim 16½" Wheel
A 16½-inch wood-rimmed wheel is also catalogued (originally a factory optional accessory for the MGA). It is offered for TD and TF owners who prefer a larger-diameter wood-rim wheel close in size to the original, supplied complete with its own integral boss.
Ordering Considerations
The original-specification wheels and centrepieces are covered under OE Steering Wheels. Aftermarket wheels (Moto Lita and competition styles), boss kits, and wheel centres are covered under Aftermarket Steering Wheels & Bosses.
When ordering an aftermarket wheel, the boss kit must be specified for the wheel brand, a Moto Lita boss will not fit a different manufacturer's wheel, and vice versa. The horn push pad in any aftermarket wheel centre is inoperative on the TD and TF; the original separate horn push location is retained.
