The MGB GT V8 exhaust system is V8-specific from manifolds to tail pipes. Cast-iron exhaust manifolds collect gases from each cylinder bank and exit at the rear of each bank, where they immediately join a single downpipe per side. The two downpipes merge into a Y-piece immediately behind the engine, leading to a centre silencer and rear silencer with a single tail pipe. The arrangement is unique to the V8 and is not interchangeable with any four-cylinder MGB exhaust component.
Cast-Iron Exhaust Manifolds
The factory exhaust manifolds are cast iron, designed to fit the available space within the V8 engine bay between the engine and the chassis side rails. Each manifold collects from four cylinders into a single outlet at the rear of the head. The cast-iron specification was MG's choice for production durability and noise damping, accepting some power loss versus the tubular manifolds used on competition Rover V8 applications.
Original-pattern cast-iron manifolds remain available as replacement items.
OE Exhaust Systems
The factory-pattern exhaust system uses mild steel construction with original-style silencer geometry to give the characteristic V8 sound. Replacement OE-pattern systems are supplied complete with the centre and rear silencer boxes, the front Y-piece and rear hanging brackets. Individual sections are also available where only part of the system needs renewal.
Stainless Upgrades
Stainless steel exhaust systems offer significantly longer service life than mild steel, particularly on cars stored in damp conditions or used infrequently. Stainless replacements are available in factory-pattern geometry, with chrome or stainless steel tail trims.
