Lighting upgrades provide significantly better visibility than the original 1970s specification, particularly important for cars used regularly on modern roads where night-time driving demands more from the lighting system than in the car's original era. Upgrades can be addressed individually as part of a focused improvement, covering headlamps, indicators, side and rear lamps, and dashboard warning lights.
LED Headlamp Conversion
The most significant lighting upgrade available is the Stella Lux H4 LED conversion, using HGL3 5530 LEDs from Lattice Power and delivering lighting levels substantially brighter than standard H4 halogen, a transformation in night driving confidence. The unit fits Lucas 7-inch headlamps with H4 bulbs, making it a direct installation on any car that has already been converted to H4 halogen or is being upgraded from sealed beam for the first time. It is fully compliant with current UK MOT requirements for vehicles first used before 1st April 1986, and carries a three-year warranty.
Halogen & Bulb-Replaceable Headlamps
Halogen sealed beam headlamps replace the original tungsten sealed beam units with halogen-filament equivalents in the same physical envelope, providing significantly brighter, whiter output for the same electrical input, fitting the original bowls without modification and wired identically to the originals. Bulb-replaceable headlamp units allow the bulbs to be replaced individually when they fail rather than replacing the complete unit, with the fitted bulb specification chosen to suit the desired output. Halogen conversion kits are available for both chrome and rubber bumper cars in right and left hand drive.
Bulbs
High-power 100/80-watt H4 bulbs are available for cars with relay-based headlamp wiring, and relay conversion is strongly advised before fitting high-power bulbs to avoid premature switch failure. Xenon-type and Silverstar enhanced-output bulbs provide improved beam range without relay conversion. LED bulb upgrades replace the original incandescent bulbs in indicators, side lamps, brake lights, reverse lights, and dashboard warning lights with LED equivalents, offering significantly longer service life, brighter output for some applications, and lower current draw that relieves load on the original wiring, though LED indicator bulbs may require a flasher relay change to compensate for the different electrical load.
