MGB Upgrades & Alternatives

Suspension & Steering > Upgrades & Alternatives

The MGB’s suspension and steering respond exceptionally well to targeted upgrading, and the range available spans everything from a single bush replacement through to a comprehensive chassis transformation. The rubber bumper MGB is particularly well-served, its increased ride height, the absence of a front anti-roll bar on early rubber bumper Roadsters, and softer damping settings all created handling characteristics that remain the primary motivation for many of the upgrades in this section. Power Steering The exclusive MGOC Spares power steering conversion uses variable valve technology to reduce steering effort by a perceived 55 per cent when parking while retaining characteristic road feel at driving speeds. Kits are available for RHD and LHD chrome bumper and rubber bumper cars, MGB GT V8, and variants requiring modified crossmembers or radiator conversions. Anti-Roll Bars The original front anti-roll bar specification varied considerably across production, from an optional 9/16-inch bar on early Roadsters to its complete deletion on rubber bumper Roadsters until June 1976. Uprated front bars in 3/4-inch, 7/8-inch, and 1-inch diameters are available as complete kits with polyurethane bushes. Care must be taken to fit the bar the correct way up. Front Telescopic Damper Conversions Replacing the original Armstrong lever arm dampers with telescopic units significantly improves front suspension response and handling consistency. Complete conversion kits are available from Koni (oil-filled, fully adjustable), Spax (14-point instant adjustment), and Gaz (freon gas-filled, 32 settings), all supplied complete with fixings and stainless braided brake hoses. Polyurethane Bush Kits Fitting polyurethane bushes transforms the feel of the MGB, improving cornering, reducing tyre wear and vibration. Complete front sets of twelve, rear shackle sets, spring eye sets, spring pads, crossmember mounting pads, and anti-roll bar bush sets are all available individually. All bushes are manufactured using hot injection moulding with an internal cross-hatched design to retain lubricant. Parabolic Spring Kits Parabolic spring kits provide a genuine step change in rear ride quality. The tapered profile allows the spring to flex proportionally across its length, absorbing road imperfections while retaining full load-bearing capability. Complete kits with uprated polyurethane bushes are available for all variants. Parabolic springs must be fitted in conjunction with telescopic rear shock absorbers. Lowering Kits The rubber bumper MGB’s increased ride height was the most commonly criticised aspect of the later cars. A complete lowering kit replaces front and rear springs to reduce ride height effectively to chrome bumper levels, chrome bumper type shock absorber link arms are also required if lever arm dampers are retained. One-inch rear lowering blocks, lowered road springs at 480lb, and fast road springs at 550lb are available. Rear Suspension Conversions The five-link rear suspension conversion is the ultimate rear upgrade, replacing the standard leaf spring arrangement with a coil spring five-link setup for tube axle Roadsters. A Panhard rod positively locates the rear axle laterally, eliminating torque steer on wide tyres. Rear Telescopic Damper Conversions Complete rear telescopic kits are available from Koni, Spax, and Gaz with the same characteristics as their front equivalents. Uprated Lever Arm Dampers For owners preferring to retain the original dampers, adjustable Armstrong damper valves allow the damping rate to be tuned without replacing the complete unit.
