MG TD & TF Trim Kits, Cockpit Panels & Fixings

Interior > Trim Kits, Cockpit Panels & Fixings

This section covers the interior trim materials and individual panels lining the cockpit walls, doors, and under-dashboard area. The TD and TF each have their own trim kit specification, reflecting different interior panel arrangements, sidescreen storage locations, and seat configurations. The original trim material was Rexine, a coated fabric providing a durable, wipe-clean surface similar to leather. A change to Vynide (PVC) may have been made during TF production, though no part number changes document this. Original Trim Construction Most TD interior trim panels were Rexine-covered plywood, with the scuttle hoop area in moulded fibreboard for the compound curves. Under the dashboard sat the Rexine-covered scuttle masking panel (baffleboard), screening the instrument panel back and preventing engine-bay draughts. The TF scuttle masking panel was smaller, not covering the full width. Replacement kits use vinyl replicating the original Rexine or Vynide appearance, with leather for door pocket edging, matching the factory specification where leather was used on wearing surfaces. Complete Trim Kits The TD trim kit comes in five colours: beige, apple green, tan, red, and black. The TF kit comes in six: the same five plus suede green (TF-only). Each kit provides the panels and materials to retrim the cockpit: door panels in vinyl with leather pocket edging, footwell side panels, rear quarter panels, under-door fillets, leather door piping, wheel arch covers, and sidescreen compartment and cockpit rear materials. The sidescreen box lid strap and additional piping for the sidescreen, cockpit rear, and dashboard areas are included as appropriate. Vinyl is also available separately. TF Cockpit Corner Panels and Starting Handle Cover The TF cockpit has specific panels not present on the TD: rear cockpit corner panels (LH and RH specific) and a starting handle cover. The starting handle location differs, on the TD it attaches to the back of the seat squab with three clips below the tonneau rail; on the TF it clips to the back of the tonneau with a dedicated TF cover. Sidescreen Compartment and Toolbox Felt Two felt-lining items are catalogued: black felt for the sidescreen compartment (used in both the TD's vertical compartment behind the tonneau and the TF's horizontal floor compartment) and off-white felt for the toolbox. These felt linings deteriorate over time as oil seeps through from tools or as the compartment is opened and closed repeatedly, and replacement felt is part of any thorough interior restoration. Under-Dash Shields The TD under-dash shield is supplied as a complete kit. The TF under-dash shield comprises a board, support frame, eight chrome screws, and eight cup washers, all available individually as well as in matching specifications. The shield prevents debris and draughts from entering the cockpit from beneath the dashboard, and is also covered under Dashboards and Instrument Panel where it is shown alongside the dashboard structure. TF Upper Crash Rail The TF dashboard incorporates a padded upper crash rail along its top, a TF-specific feature not present on the TD. The crash rail foam is supplied uncovered, allowing the trimmer to cover it in vinyl matching the chosen interior colour scheme. The crash rail mounts to the scuttle via nine stud plates with associated plain washers, spring washers, and nuts (nine of each). The foam, stud plates, and fasteners are all catalogued individually for owners completing a TF dashboard rebuild. Upholstery Adhesives Upholstery adhesive is catalogued in both a 500-millilitre tin and a 400-millilitre aerosol. The tin is the practical choice for larger applications such as bonding entire panels; the aerosol is convenient for smaller areas, tight corners, and partial work. Adhesive is the principal alternative to mechanical fasteners for areas where panels meet vertical surfaces or curved transitions where studs and clips would be visually intrusive. Ordering Considerations Trim kit specification differs between TD and TF, confirm the model. Colour options are customer choice, with black, beige, and red as the commoner original specifications and green and tan also period-correct. Suede Green is TF-only. Cockpit corner panels, starting handle cover, and crash rail foam are TF-specific. Sidescreen compartment and toolbox felts, under-dash shield kits, and upholstery adhesives are common to both. All components, panels, fasteners, and consumables are catalogued individually and in sets.
