MGF & TF Tyres

Road Wheels > Tyres

Four tyres are catalogued covering the standard MGF and MG TF fitments in their correct staggered front and rear sizes. For 15-inch wheels, the Toyo Proxes TR1 is supplied: 185/55×15 82V at the front and 205/50×15 89V XL at the rear. The Proxes TR1 is Toyo's current ultra-high-performance summer tyre, launched in 2019 as successor to the long-established Proxes T1R. It features an asymmetric tread pattern with zigzag and taper grooves designed for wet-weather drainage, twin open slits, and a high-stiffness outer rib for cornering stability. The rear 205/50×15 carries an XL (Extra Load) designation, a higher load index than the standard 85V spec, appropriate for the MG TF's rear-weight-biased mid-engine layout. For 16-inch wheels, the Nankang AS-2+ is supplied: 195/45×16 84V at the front and 215/40×16 86V at the rear. The Nankang AS-2+ is an ultra-high-performance all-season tyre from Nankang (Taiwan), well-regarded for consistent wet and dry grip alongside good value pricing. The all-season compound makes the AS-2+ a practical option for owners using their MG TF year-round in UK climate conditions, with better cold-weather behaviour than a summer-only tyre. All Four Tyres V-Rated All four catalogued tyres carry a V speed rating, 149 mph maximum, which is the minimum specification suitable for any MGF or MG TF. The MG TF 160 reaches 137 mph top speed and legally requires a V-rated or higher tyre; the MG TF 135 at 127 mph and standard 1.8i models at 118 to 120 mph require at minimum a V rating. Fitting a tyre with a lower speed rating is both unsafe and an MOT failure point. V rating also matches the factory original specification fitted when the cars were new. Staggered Sizing, Front and Rear Tyres Must Match Brand The MGF and MG TF use staggered front and rear tyre sizes to match the mid-engine weight distribution of approximately 45% front / 55% rear. This means wider rear tyres providing more grip at the axle that carries the engine weight and transmits drive to the road. The staggered sizing applies consistently across all variants and both wheel sizes. Critical ordering guidance: the front and rear tyres are different sizes, so tyres cannot be rotated front to rear to even out wear, front tyres will wear faster than rears despite carrying less weight, because steering loads and front suspension geometry produce more tyre scrub. However, all four tyres on the car must match in brand and model, mixing a Toyo at one corner with a Nankang at another (or any other brand combination) produces unpredictable handling, particularly at the limit. When replacing tyres, plan to replace the complete axle set or the complete four-tyre set at once. Tyre Pressure and Mid-Engine Sensitivity The MGF and MG TF are particularly sensitive to tyre pressure because of the mid-engine weight distribution. The specified pressures for loaded and unloaded conditions are shown on a plate in the driver-side door shut area. Under-inflation at the rear increases rear-end breakaway risk under hard cornering, the rear carries most of the weight, and under-inflated rears cannot cope. Over-inflation reduces the contact patch and produces a nervous, darty steering feel. Tyre pressures should be checked cold (before driving, or after the car has been stationary for several hours) and set to the door-plate specification. Ordering Notes Tyres are despatched with valves fitted. Professional fitting, balancing, and (ideally) a four-wheel alignment check are strongly recommended after fitting new tyres, an out-of-alignment car will wear even new premium tyres prematurely. Tyre age should also be checked on arrival via the DOT code stamped on the sidewall (4-digit week/year), a tyre more than 5 years old at date of purchase may be approaching the end of its useful rubber life regardless of tread depth.
