Paint & Rust Protection > Other Spray Paint

The Other Spray Paint section covers the specialist aerosol coatings that fall outside the main Body and Engine Paint range but that come up regularly during classic-car restoration work. These are the products with specific properties, high-temperature resistance, hammer finish for chassis components, underseal for the bottom of the car, that solve particular problems without overlapping with the body-and-engine-colour range. High-Temperature and Exhaust Paint High-temperature paint is rated for the temperatures an exhaust manifold and downpipe see in service, typically up to 600°C or more for the manifold itself, dropping through the system as the gases cool. Conventional engine paint will lift and discolour at these temperatures, but the silicone-modified high-temperature formulations stay stable. Black is the typical finish, with silver, copper and gold metallic options for owners who want a more decorative finish on a visible manifold. The paint cures at the operating temperature of the system, a freshly-painted manifold cures fully during the first few heat cycles of running, which is why a low-mileage post-rebuild engine sometimes shows the paint cure visibly through the first few weeks of use. Hammer Finish, Underseal and Chassis Paint Hammer-finish enamel, the textured, slightly metallic finish associated with toolboxes and machinery, is the classic choice for chassis components, suspension brackets, gearbox crossmembers and the various visible underbody items where a smooth glossy paint would look wrong. The textured finish hides minor surface imperfections, holds up to stone chips and road debris, and produces the workmanlike appearance that suits a restored chassis without trying to make it look factory-new. Hammerite is the established brand for this finish and is covered in detail in the Rust Protection section under its own entry. Underseal sprays cover the bottom of the floorpan, the wheel arches, the sill area and the various underbody surfaces where a heavy-duty stone-chip and waterproof coating is the right specification. The product is heavier-bodied than ordinary paint, applied directly over a primed surface, and produces a durable barrier against the road salt, gravel and moisture that aged the original underbody on every classic. Aerosol Etch Primer and Specialist Products Aerosol etch primer is stocked here as well as in the main Primers section, the aerosol format suits touch-up and small-area work where breaking out a tin and a gun would be impractical. The wider specialist range covers products like rubberised stone-chip aerosol for repairing damaged underseal, clear lacquer aerosols for sealing freshly-polished bare metal, satin and matt-black aerosols for the various decorative engine-bay and trim applications that don't fit the glossy body-paint range, and the specialist plastic adhesion promoter for owners painting any of the modern plastic components that find their way onto a classic during restoration.
