The single most important distinction in this section is the change in seat design between the two models. The TD retained the traditional T-series arrangement of a one-piece seat squab with individual seat cushions, mounted on wooden bases. The TF abandoned this in favour of two individual bucket-type seats, a defining change introduced with the 1953 restyle. The TF seats were individually adjustable by a lever at the bottom outside front corner of each cushion, and the frames were hinged to the floor at the front so that each seat could tilt forward for access behind.
Components do not interchange between the two patterns, so the model must be established before ordering any seat part.
Upholstery and Stitching Detail
On the TF, wearing surfaces and cushion edges were upholstered in leather, with the edges and backs of the squabs finished in Rexine. The stitching pattern is a useful originality reference: seven flutes to each squab but only six to the cushion, in each case bordered by panels wider than the individual flutes.
During the production run a change is believed to have occurred from Rexine to the then-new Vynide (PVC) trim material, although no part-number change documents the switch, it is possible Vynide was used from the start of TF production. All seat covers supplied are leather-faced with matching vinyl used elsewhere, as original.
New, Reconditioned and Self-Build Options
Three routes are catered for. Brand-new seat assemblies, upholstered to original specification, are offered as a complete car set in the full range of original colours, black, beige, tan, racing green, red and suede green for the TF; black, beige, apple green, tan/cinnamon and red for the TD. A reconditioning service re-trims the customer's own frames. For those rebuilding their own seats, cover kits, wooden seat bases (with or without foams), squab padding and base foam kits are all available separately, allowing any state of build to be matched to the owner's circumstances.
Frames, Slides and Adjustment Hardware
The supporting hardware differs between the models. The TF uses a seat slide set for both right- and left-hand seats, seat-back-to-cushion hinges with sleeves, and a tonneau cover rail along the top of each seat back, the rails doubling as grab handles when tilting the seats forward. The TD adjustment system uses wheel-arch brackets with retaining plates, domed nuts, wing bolts and fibre washers. Wooden seat bases, seat-back adjustment brackets, chrome bracket screws and the starting-handle stowage clips are all catalogued to suit each pattern.
Ordering Considerations
Always confirm whether the car is a TD or a TF, as no seat assembly, cover kit or base is shared between them. State the required colour, and specify whether new assemblies, a reconditioning service, or self-build components are wanted. For LHD cars, note that driver/passenger handing may affect slide and bracket selection.
