The MGB GT V8 handbrake operates the rear drum brakes mechanically via a cable system, providing parking brake function and emergency braking capability. Pulling the handbrake lever between the front seats applies tension to the handbrake cables, which pull operating levers at each rear brake backplate to push the brake shoes against the drums. The system is fully mechanical and operates independently of the hydraulic brake system.
Handbrake Lever
The handbrake lever is mounted on the transmission tunnel between the front seats. The lever pivots on a base bracket bolted to the bodyshell, with a ratchet mechanism that holds the lever in any applied position until the release button is pressed. The lever, ratchet pawl and release button are wear items that can become loose or stiff in service.
Handbrake Cables
A primary cable runs from the handbrake lever rearwards to a cable compensator under the car. From the compensator, two secondary cables (one for each rear brake) run to the operating levers at each rear brake backplate. Cables are protected by outer sheaths and corrode in service, particularly at the exposed end fittings. Cable replacement is straightforward during a major brake service.
Cable Compensator
The cable compensator equalises the handbrake force between the two rear brakes, ensuring both brakes apply at the same time and with the same force. Without the compensator, slight differences in cable length or shoe adjustment would cause one brake to apply before the other, leading to uneven braking. The compensator is a small but important component that can wear or seize in service.
Operating Levers and Gaiter
Operating levers at each rear brake backplate transfer the cable pull into shoe-spreading force. Worn operating lever pivots cause sloppy handbrake operation and reduced parking brake effectiveness. The handbrake gaiter is the rubber boot covering the lever's base, keeping debris out of the cable connection point, a small item but essential for cable longevity.
