The MGC exhaust system is entirely specific to the model and shares no components with the MGB. The six-cylinder C-series engine requires a fundamentally different exhaust layout from the four-cylinder B-series, the manifold design, pipe lengths, routing, and silencer specification are all unique. The exhaust system comprises a two-piece cast iron exhaust manifold (front and rear sections) bolting to the cylinder head, a front pipe assembly connecting the manifold to the rear section, and a rear pipe and twin silencer assembly exiting at the rear of the car. Fifteen studs with nuts and plain washers are shared between the inlet and exhaust manifolds at the cylinder head face.
Two seals at the manifold-to-front-pipe joint, and six studs with spring washers and nuts, secure the exhaust connection.
Market-Specific Manifolds
Two exhaust manifold specifications were used. Home market and most export cars (not USA/Canada) use a front manifold and rear manifold pair with a standard port configuration. USA and later Canadian cars use a different pair with additional provisions for the air injection emissions control equipment. Both sets bolt to the cylinder head using the same fifteen shared studs, and both connect to the same front pipe assembly.
When ordering replacement manifolds, the market specification must be identified, the two types are not interchangeable.
Stainless Steel Options
A premium stainless steel exhaust system manufactured by Double S Exhausts, Britain's premier stainless exhaust company, is available as a direct replacement for the entire mild steel system. Manufactured from 309 and 401 grade stainless steels with mirror-finish silencers, the system is produced to fine tolerances for easy DIY fitment and comes with a lifetime guarantee. A six-branch stainless steel tubular exhaust manifold is also available as a performance upgrade, replacing the standard cast iron manifolds with a free-flowing design that improves exhaust gas scavenging and power output. Chrome and stainless steel exhaust tail trims provide an attractive finishing detail at the rear of the car.
Exhaust Mounting
A complete exhaust mounting kit provides all the clamps, mounting rubbers, brackets, hangers, saddles, insulation washers, and fixings required for a standard MGC exhaust system in a single package. The system is supported at three points: front brackets at the crossmember, an intermediate mounting at the mid-point, and a rear bracket and hanger assembly. Each mounting point uses dedicated rubbers, insulation washers, and hardware, all available individually for targeted replacement of deteriorated mountings.
