The MGC was fitted with 15-inch wheels as standard, one inch larger than the MGB's 14-inch wheels, on 5-inch wide rims (designated 5Jx15). This is a significant visual and practical distinction from the MGB, and wheel and tyre components are not interchangeable between the two models. The larger wheel diameter accommodates the Girling 11-inch front brake discs and provides a higher overall gearing contribution.
Steel Disc Wheels
The less common steel disc wheels feature ten rectangular ventilation holes, quite different in appearance from the MGB's twelve-oval-hole design, with bevelled-edge hub caps and five-stud fixings. These disc wheels were always painted in a silver-grey colour.
Wire Wheels
Painted aluminium 72-spoke wire wheels were the more common fitment, particularly on export cars. These wheels were available in painted aluminium finish as standard, with optional chrome plating. In the UK home market, eared knock-off spinners continued in use until August 1968, after which octagonal nuts, already standard on most export markets, were commonised across all production. The knock-ons and octagonal nuts for the wire wheels were the same items as used on the MGB.
Tyres
The MGC was originally fitted with 165-15 Dunlop SP41 tyres on 1967 to 1968 cars, changing to 165H-15 SP68 on 1969 models. Radial tyres were standard throughout production, the MGC was never fitted with crossply tyres from the factory. It is worth noting that the MGC parts list claims Rostyle wheels became optional equipment on 1969 models, but this is not correct, no MGC was ever factory-fitted with Rostyle wheels despite this listing.
