The windscreen washer fluid reservoir on the MGC is unique to the model, it is a different shape and mounting from the MGB's, reflecting the different engine bay layout created by the six-cylinder engine installation and the forward-mounted radiator. The reservoir, retaining strap, cap, and non-return foot valve are all MGC-specific items and must be ordered as such, an MGB washer bottle will not fit the MGC engine bay. The non-return foot valve prevents the washer fluid from draining back into the reservoir between uses, ensuring instant washer operation when the pump is activated rather than the delay that occurs when the pump has to refill empty pipework before fluid reaches the jets.
Washer Jets and Pipework
The washer jets are mounted on the scuttle panel ahead of the windscreen, directing twin streams of washer fluid onto the windscreen at the base of the wiper sweep area. The jets are the same type as fitted to the contemporary MGB and are adjustable, a fine needle or pin inserted into the jet nozzle allows the spray direction to be aimed for optimal windscreen coverage. Over time, the jet nozzles become blocked with mineral deposits from evaporated washer fluid, reducing the spray to a trickle or misdirecting it off the screen entirely. Clearing blocked jets with a pin and flushing the system with clean water restores function.
Upgraded washer jets providing a fan-shaped spray pattern rather than the original twin-stream are available as an improvement, the fan spray covers a wider area of the screen with each pump stroke.
Washer Pump
The washer pump is operated by a dashboard-mounted switch or lever. The pump draws fluid from the reservoir through the non-return valve and pushes it through the pipework to the jets. The pipework runs from the reservoir through the engine bay to the scuttle-mounted jets, and should be checked for splits, kinks, and disconnections if washer output is weak or absent.
