Badges and decals changed frequently across the Midget production run, and the correct specification depends on the production date. Getting the badges right is an important detail for any restoration, incorrect badges for the production period are one of the most common errors on restored cars and are immediately obvious to knowledgeable owners and judges.
MG Boot Badges
The MG boot badge changed several times during production. Early chrome-bumper cars used a three-piece metal MG octagon badge set secured by spire nuts and blind fixings.
Later chrome-bumper cars used a plastic silver-on-black MG badge. The rubber-bumper 1500 used a metal badge in either gold-on-black or silver-on-black finish. A separate 'Midget' script boot badge was also fitted below the MG octagon. All badge types and their fixing clips and spire nuts are available.
British Leyland Badges
British Leyland corporate identity badges were fitted to the front wings from the introduction of the BL marque. Initially two badges were fitted, one on each front wing. From GAN5-118599, the badge count was reduced to a single badge on the passenger-side wing only. Both the earlier two-badge and later single-badge specifications and their fixings are available.
Sill Letter Sets
Individual letters spelling 'MIDGET' were fitted to the outer sills of chrome-bumper Midgets from 1970 onward. Each letter is held by push-fix clips pressed into pre-drilled holes in the sill. Letter sets are supplied as a pair (one per side) with replacement clips.
When fitting letters to a new replacement sill, a template should be made from the old sill before removal to ensure correct spacing, once holes are drilled in the wrong position, the sill is marked.
GB Letters and Accessory Badges
GB letter sets are available in chrome with screw fixings and in stainless steel with self-adhesive backing. A Union Jack enamel badge with fixings provides a traditional finishing touch. These accessory badges complement the factory-fitted items and are popular additions for cars used on continental tours.
