Cooling

Cooling system components for classic British cars, including radiators, water pumps, thermostats, hoses, fittings and electric fan kits. Overheating remains one of the most common issues for classic car owners, particularly in summer traffic, and most British classics were originally specified with cooling capacity that suits steady cruising rather than the modern stop-start traffic many cars now find themselves in. Cooling System Architecture Most British classics from the 1950s through to the 1980s used a conventional pressurised cooling system with a front-mounted radiator, mechanical or electric fan, belt-driven water pump, wax-element thermostat and rubber hoses. System pressure increased gradually across this period from 4 psi to 13 psi as cooling demands rose with higher-output engines. Hose routing, fan blade count and water pump design all evolved within each marque, often without external indication, so the engine number or chassis date is usually the most reliable guide when ordering parts. Radiators Original British classic radiators are typically copper-brass core construction with soldered side tanks. Modern aluminium-core replacements are widely available and offer significantly improved cooling capacity, particularly in slow-moving traffic, while remaining visually appropriate where finish is important. Header tank position, filler neck height and outlet sizes vary by application, please verify against your existing radiator before ordering. Water Pumps, Thermostats & Hoses Water pumps for the BMC A, B and C-Series families are well-supported, as are pumps for Triumph and Rover units. Thermostats are typically wax-element types in a small range of opening temperatures (usually 74°C, 82°C or 88°C). Cooling hoses are now widely available in silicone as an alternative to original rubber, offering a longer service life and improved appearance for show cars. Hose clamps should always be replaced when fitting new hoses; original-pattern jubilee clips are stocked alongside modern OEM-style band clamps. Cooling Upgrades The most common cooling upgrade fitted by classic owners is the electric fan conversion. This removes the engine-driven fan, freeing a small amount of power and reducing under-bonnet heat soak in traffic, with the electric fan triggered by a thermostatic switch fitted to the radiator. Aluminium radiators, recored uprated radiators and high-flow water pumps are also available where the demands placed on the car warrant them, particularly for owners who do regular long-distance touring or hot-climate use. The MGOC Spares British Classic Car Parts Cooling range encompasses radiators, water pumps, thermostats, cooling hoses, hose clamps, mechanical and electric fans, fan switches and cooling system upgrades for the British classics we serve. MGOC Spares is constantly expanding our range for these non-MG British classic marques, and new lines are being added to this section regularly.
