The Classic Mini’s switchgear went through three distinct generations across forty-one years of production. Early cars used individual toggle and rocker switches spread across the fascia and steering column. From the mid-1970s the switches consolidated into dedicated column stalks (indicators, flash, dip and horn on one stalk, wipers and washers on the other) and a row of rocker panel switches fitted to the centre fascia.
From 1997 the MPi cars adopted a new column switch arrangement to work with the airbag steering wheel. Identifying which switch era your car was built in is the starting point for ordering any replacement.
Column Stalks
The combined indicator, flash/dip and horn column switch was fitted in four distinct specifications across production, 1976 to 1985 RHD with the switch on the right-hand side, 1985 to 1989 with the switch moved to the left-hand side on both RHD and LHD, 1989 to 1996 with a further revised left-hand switch, and 1997-on airbag-compatible for MPi cars. The wipers-and-washers column stalk follows the same four-era split but on the opposite side of the column. Each specification is a different part and must be matched to the car’s year and steering side.
Light and Headlight Switches
The main light panel switch covering head, side and tail lights was fitted up to 1996. Separate panel switches cover front fog, rear fog, hazard warning, heated rear window, brake check and headlight levelling (where fitted from 1991 onwards). Panel switches fit the switch panel cut-outs in the fascia and are secured by their own clips, replacement is straightforward without dismantling the dashboard.
Heater Switches
The heater fan switch is supplied in two specifications, single-speed fan for the 1976 to 1996 heaters and two-speed fan for the 1997-on MPi heater. The single-speed switch covers the earlier metal-cased and the 1992 to 1996 plastic-cased heaters, while the two-speed switch is specific to the 1997-on plastic-cased heater. Confirming whether your car has a single-speed or two-speed heater fan is essential before ordering.
Brake Light Switches
The standard brake light switch operates from the brake pedal and is fitted to most production cars. An alternative hydraulic pressure-operated brake light switch with small spade terminals is used on cars where the pedal switch does not fit, typically where a brake servo or uprated master cylinder has been installed. Locking nuts secure both switch types. Brake light switches are among the most common switch failures on a Mini and replacement is a straightforward owner task.
Reversing, Gearbox and Hazard Switches
The reversing light switch fits into the gearbox casing and illuminates the reversing lamp when reverse gear is selected. A gearbox inhibitor switch is fitted on automatic gearboxes to prevent starting in anything other than Park or Neutral. The hazard warning panel switch fits the switch panel, and a rectangular flasher unit (one specification up to 1991, a second from 1991) handles the indicator and hazard flash function.
Steering Lock, Ignition Switch and Column Cowl
The steering lock assembly with two keys is fitted in two specifications, the pre-1996 non-airbag specification and the 1997-on airbag-compatible specification. Each steering lock includes the ignition switch and secures to the column with shear bolts specific to the fitment. The steering column cowl covers the column between the steering wheel and the lock housing.
Coolant Fan and Engine Switches
The radiator fan switch operates the electric cooling fan on SPi and 1992 to 1994 carburettor cars. Thermostat housing fan switches cover other specifications, and a Cooper-specific coolant fan switch covers the Cooper carburettor and Cooper SPi cars. Oil pressure warning light switches in separate specifications for 1989 to 1996 carb/SPi and 1997-on MPi operate the oil pressure warning lamp. The inertia petrol cut-off switch cuts fuel pump power in an impact.
MGOC Spares Mini Switch Range
The MGOC Spares Classic Mini switch range covers column stalks (indicator/flash/dip/horn and wipers/washers) for 1976 to 1985, 1985 to 1989, 1989 to 1996 and 1997-on airbag specifications, panel switches (head/side/tail, rear fog, front fog, hazard warning, heated rear window, brake check, electric sunroof, headlight levelling), rocker headlight switch, heater fan switches for single and two-speed heaters, brake light switches (pedal and hydraulic spade types), reversing and gearbox inhibitor switches, flasher units, steering lock assemblies for pre-1996 and 1997-on airbag cars, steering column cowl, radiator and thermostat housing fan switches, Cooper coolant fan switch, oil pressure warning switches and the inertia fuel cut-off switch.
