MGF & TF Front Springs & Shock Absorbers

Suspension & Steering > Front Suspension > Front Springs & Shock Absorbers

The MGF front suspension is sprung by Hydragas displacer units pressurised with nitrogen gas. Two front specifications exist: the standard MGF displacer used across the main model range, and the MGF Trophy displacer with a higher springing rate matched to the Trophy 160's stiffened suspension package. The two are not interchangeable. Each front displacer connects to the corresponding rear displacer on the same side of the car via Hydragas pipe assemblies running along the underside. Front pipes are handed LH and RH and have different specifications for standard MGF and MGF Trophy, the Trophy pipes are unique to that model. The Hydragas system is topped up through a valve assembly that provides the filling and gassing point; the valve is an MGF-specific item with no TF equivalent. Pipe unions are sealed by rubber O-rings that should be renewed whenever a pipe is disturbed, as old O-rings are a common source of fluid seepage. Hydragas Gas Pressure, Normal Maintenance Gas pressure loss over time is normal on the Hydragas system, the nitrogen gradually permeates through the displacer diaphragm, causing the car to sit progressively lower and ride more harshly. Re-pressurisation (re-gassing) restores the correct pressure and ride height; this is routine maintenance for any MGF on original Hydragas and is typically carried out by specialists with the correct equipment. If a displacer has an internal seal failure rather than simple pressure loss, re-gassing will not hold and the unit must be replaced, which is constrained by the fact that Hydragas displacers are no longer manufactured. Hydrolastic fluid for topping up during service is covered on the separate Hydrolastic Suspension Fluid child page. MGF Front Dampers and Knuckle Joints Separate telescopic front dampers control the damping rate independent of the Hydragas springing. Standard replacement MGF front dampers are catalogued alongside uprated Spax adjustable dampers and Gaz adjustable dampers, both supplied as sets of four (all four corners). The adjustable dampers allow owners to fine-tune damping force to match their driving style or to complement any spring/displacer pressure modifications. The front suspension knuckle joint connects the Hydragas displacer to the lower wishbone and is an MGF-specific item. A lowering kit of four shorter knuckle joints (one per corner) is catalogued as a simple ride-height reduction option that does not require conversion away from Hydragas, a popular modification for MGF owners seeking a more aggressive stance while keeping the original suspension system. MG TF Front Coil Springs The MG TF uses conventional coil springs at the front. The spring specification changed at VIN 5D639631: earlier cars (to VIN 5D639630) used the original firmer spring; later cars (from VIN 5D639631) received a softer, revised spring introduced with the 2005 model year suspension changes that addressed criticism of the early MG TF's harsh ride. Fitting early springs to a later car or vice versa alters the ride and handling balance significantly, so VIN confirmation is essential when ordering. MG TF Front Dampers, Standard, Lowered, and Later Three standard MG TF front damper specifications are catalogued: an early standard damper for the original MG TF specification, a later standard damper for the 2005-onwards softer ride specification, and a lowered damper for MG TF Sportspack and related lowered-stance applications. The early damper is the original 2002 to 2004 firm calibration; the later damper incorporates the softer valving of the 2005 MY improvements. Bump stops and bump-stop cups also changed at VIN 5D639631, so a complete "while it's apart" refresh on a pre-2005 car may include damper, spring, bump stop, and bump-stop cup. Bilstein Comfort Handling Pack The Bilstein Comfort Handling Pack is one of the most widely-fitted upgrades for MG TF owners with pre-2005 cars. Developed by Bilstein specifically for the MG TF, the pack comprises a set of four three-position-adjustable Bilstein dampers covering front and rear, and is suitable for MG TF up to VIN 5D639630 (the pre-softer-spec cars). The pack effectively mimics the 2005-MY softer ride using original springs, and the same Bilstein specification was fitted as standard to the LE500 and later MG TFs. Three ride-quality settings allow owners to choose from a softer ride-biased setting, a medium "balanced" setting, and a firmer road/fast-road setting. Owner feedback consistently reports this as the single most effective ride-comfort improvement available for early MG TFs.
