Hood Care

The hood is one of the most exposed components on any classic-MG roadster, left in the open weather for days at a time, faded by UV exposure, accumulating road grime, and slowly losing its water-repellent properties as the original surface treatments wear off. Hood care products extend the working life of a hood substantially, restoring its appearance and performance through periodic application rather than committing to a costly hood renewal, the difference between a well-maintained hood lasting fifteen to twenty years and a neglected one needing replacement in eight to ten being almost entirely down to the care it receives. Cleaning First Hood care starts with cleaning, as a clean dry hood is the right starting point for either colour renovation or water-repellent application, and dirty material will not accept either treatment cleanly. Fabric hoods in Double Duck or mohair must be washed with a specialist fabric shampoo, never with household detergents, which strip the weatherproofing treatment from the material, while vinyl hoods should be cleaned with a dedicated vinyl cleaner to remove road grime, bird deposits, and tree sap without damaging the surface, and domestic products containing bleach or solvents must never be used on vinyl as they attack the plasticiser and accelerate brittleness. Both are applied with a soft brush and rinsed thoroughly, and high-pressure washing should be avoided as it can drive water through the seams and into the underlying frame. Colour Revival & Reproofing The Renovo range is the established UK standard for classic-MG hood renewal, with colour-restoring revivers that contain pigment particles in a flexible binder, applied to a clean dry hood where they penetrate the surface fibres and deposit fresh pigment to restore the original colour, available colour-matched in black, navy, and the other standard hood colours used during production. Water-repellent ultraproofers restore the hood's ability to shed rain rather than absorb it, as the original hood materials were treated during manufacture with a hydrophobic finish that wears off over years of use, after which the hood absorbs water and becomes heavier and slower-drying, allowing water through to the cabin in heavy rain. Separate fabric and vinyl ultraproofer formulations are available, as the two materials respond to different chemicals, and the fabric versions add UV protection and a mould and mildew inhibitor. The correct sequence is to clean first, allow to dry fully, apply the colour reviver if needed and allow it to cure, then apply the water-repellent over the renewed surface, with a hood that beads water cleanly performing correctly and one that absorbs water and darkens being overdue for treatment. Rear Window & Frame A dedicated plastic window polish is formulated for the flexible plastic rear windows used on classic-MG hoods, removing the fine scratches and haze that accumulate over time and cause the window to appear clouded, significantly reducing rearward visibility, available in sizes for occasional or regular use, though a window with deep scratches or crazing from age and UV may be beyond restoration and need replacing with the next hood. For the early T-types, hood frame paint in tan restores the frame to its correct light tan finish. With an annual treatment routine a quality hood will last many years longer than an untreated one, but if the material has become rigid, cracked along the fold lines, or no longer holds waterproofing despite reproofing, it is beyond the point where care products can restore it and replacement is the only solution.
