Steel disc wheel cars use a five-stud fixing arrangement with standard wheel nuts, ten studs and ten nuts per car (five per wheel). Hub caps with the distinctive MGC bevelled-edge design complete the steel wheel appearance. Wheel studs should be inspected for wear and stretch during brake or hub servicing, and replaced if any doubt exists about their condition.
Wire Wheel Fixings
Wire wheel cars use knock-off spinners or octagonal nuts depending on market and production date. Early UK home market cars up to August 1968 used the traditional two-eared knock-off spinner, tightened and removed with a copper-faced mallet.
From August 1968, all markets standardised on the octagonal nut type, which can be tightened with a standard wheel brace. Both types are threaded right-hand on the right side and left-hand on the left side of the car, so that wheel rotation tends to tighten rather than loosen the nut. The knock-ons and octagonal nuts are interchangeable between the MGC and the MGB.
