Electrical > LED & Uprated Lighting

LED lighting is the most consequential modernisation available for the lighting system on any classic MG. The standard tungsten-and-sealed-beam lighting fitted to the cars during production delivers a fraction of the light output that modern LED technology achieves, with current draw several times higher and service life measured in hundreds rather than thousands of hours. LED conversions address all three issues at one stroke, more light, less current draw, and effectively unlimited service life, while maintaining the period appearance of the original lights from the outside, a particularly worthwhile improvement on the small, low cars in the range that share modern roads with much larger vehicles. LED Headlamp Conversion The headline LED upgrade is the Stella Lux H4 LED conversion from the Q Parts sister brand, a direct fit for cars already running 7-inch H4 headlamps, the LED unit slotting into the existing H4 connector and bulb seat. It delivers a vastly improved beam pattern with around four times the brightness of standard H4 halogen in a neutral white colour temperature that closely matches modern car headlamps, improving visibility both for the driver and for oncoming traffic, while drawing substantially less current, typically 25 to 35 watts compared with the 60-watt or higher draw of the original sealed-beam or halogen unit, reducing load on the original wiring, switches, and charging system. With a rated lifespan exceeding 30,000 hours it effectively eliminates the need for headlamp renewal during ownership, and quality units are compliant with current UK MOT requirements for vehicles first used before 1st April 1986, which covers the whole classic range, and carry a multi-year warranty. LED Indicator, Side, Brake & Interior Bulbs LED bulbs are stocked as direct-replacement specifications for the various smaller lights across the car, indicator bulbs with amber LED arrays, side-lamp and tail bulbs with white and red arrays, brake-light bulbs with bright red arrays, interior festoon bulbs for the courtesy lights, and small bayonet or capless bulbs for the instrument panel, each using the same physical fitting and electrical connection as the original tungsten bulb but delivering brighter, more consistent illumination with much lower current draw and many years of service life. The brake-light benefit is more than cosmetic, as an LED illuminates roughly 0.2 seconds faster than a filament bulb, providing several metres of additional warning distance to following traffic at speed. For owners renewing the bulbs as part of routine maintenance, switching to LED at the same time is typically a cost-effective long-term upgrade, and on the early cars with modest dynamo charging output the reduced current draw is a real benefit, freeing capacity for other circuits and helping maintain battery condition. Flasher Relay & Application Considerations The lower current draw of LED indicators can confuse the original-pattern thermal flasher relay, which relies on the heat generated by a certain current draw to time its flashing cycle, so with LED bulbs drawing much less current the flasher may flash too quickly or not at all. The solution is to fit an electronic flasher relay, a small solid-state unit that flashes correctly regardless of bulb current draw, available for both positive and negative earth systems, or to fit a load resistor in parallel with each LED indicator to bring the effective current back up to the original specification. Uprated halogen bulbs are stocked for positions where LED is not suitable, providing brighter light in standard fittings, and the technical team is available to advise on the right LED specification, the appropriate supporting hardware such as flasher relays and load resistors, and the right balance of modernisation versus period-correct appearance for the owner's preferences.
