Paint & Rust Protection > Polish & Body Protection

This section covers the finishing and protection products that maintain the appearance of paintwork, chrome, and brightwork on a classic MG, organised around the sequence of work, cutting compound to remove oxidation and minor surface defects, glaze to bring back the gloss and depth, wax or synthetic sealant for the protective layer, and dedicated chrome polishes and protection films for the brightwork and the vulnerable lower body areas. Protecting paintwork and brightwork on these cars is an ongoing commitment, particularly on a car used regularly where the lower body panels and front end take a constant bombardment of stone chips, road spray, and contamination, the relatively thin steel panels and low ride height of the chrome-bumper cars in particular meaning that the sills, front valance, lower wings, and door leading edges are all vulnerable areas. Cutting Compounds, Glaze, Wax & Sealants Cutting compounds are mildly abrasive polishes that remove the top few microns of oxidised paint from a tired surface, the dull, chalky appearance that an older paint job develops as the surface paint slowly oxidises under UV exposure, the mild abrasive lifting the dead surface layer to reveal the fresh paint underneath and dramatically restore the depth and richness of the colour. Glaze is the next step, a less abrasive polish that fills any remaining micro-scratches and brings the paint to a high gloss, the combination restoring a tired paint job to a finish that often eliminates the need for a full respray on a car that simply needed proper detailing. Carnauba wax is the traditional protective layer applied over polished paintwork, a natural plant wax that forms a sacrificial layer protecting the paint from UV exposure, light contamination, and the early stages of oxidation, while synthetic paint sealants offer longer-lasting protection than wax, typically six to twelve months versus two to three months for carnauba, a properly applied sealant chemically bonding to the paint and giving hydrophobic behaviour that sheds water cleanly. The correct sequence is wash, clay bar to remove bonded contaminants that washing cannot shift, compound if needed, polish, then wax or sealant, and quick-detailer spray provides fast maintenance between full polishes. Period Paint & Modern Paint Systems The cars left the factory with period paint systems, typically cellulose or synthetic enamel, which behave differently from the modern base-coat-and-clear-coat systems applied during most recent resprays, period paint being softer and more absorbent, polishable to restore shine when it oxidises but also more vulnerable to UV damage, water marking, and hard detergent chemistry. Products designed for modern clear-coat cars may be too aggressive for period paint systems, while specialist classic-car polishes and waxes are formulated to clean and protect without damaging the original finish, so for cars with original period paint the specialist classic-car polish range is the correct choice, while for cars resprayed in modern paint systems the modern detailing products can also be used, and the paint system should always be confirmed before choosing aggressive cutting compounds. Chrome Polish, Paint Protection Film & Trim Care The cars carry significant chrome and brightwork content, bumpers, overriders, grilles, badges, door and windscreen finishers, and various smaller chromed fittings, and specific chrome polishes such as Autosol and Renovo Chrome and Metal Polish preserve the plating and prevent the pitting and corrosion that affect cars stored in damp conditions or used in winter, with chrome polish particularly important on cars retaining original plating as replating is a specialist process. Foliatec self-adhesive paint protection film provides a clear physical barrier against stone chips on vulnerable surfaces, sills, front valance, lower wings, and door leading edges, without affecting the appearance of the paintwork, the film cut to suit the panel and laid down with a soft squeegee to expel air, particularly valued by owners running freshly-resprayed cars who want to preserve the finish through the early years. Stone chip shield in black provides a textured protective coating for the underside of wheel arches and lower body areas where stone chips cause the greatest damage, applied by aerosol for straightforward coverage, and 303 Rubber Seal Protectant keeps door seals, hood rubber, and all exterior rubber trim conditioned and resistant to the cracking and hardening that causes draughts, water ingress, and poor appearance on a car of this age.
