A wind deflector is available for cars fitted with an aftermarket sunroof. The deflector mounts at the leading edge of the sunroof aperture and redirects airflow over the opening, reducing the turbulence and wind noise that make sunroof use impractical at higher speeds. Without a deflector, the aerodynamic buffeting through an open sunroof at motorway speeds can be uncomfortable enough to discourage using the sunroof at all, so fitting a deflector makes the sunroof a practical feature for everyday driving rather than a low-speed novelty.
Construction & Fitment
The deflector is typically a transparent acrylic or smoked-tint plastic strip that mounts to the roof at the forward edge of the sunroof, using adhesive foam tape or screw fixings depending on specification. Fitting is straightforward and reversible if the deflector is to be removed in future. Compatibility depends on the specific sunroof installation, as factory and aftermarket sunroofs use different aperture dimensions, and the appropriate deflector specification must be selected. Neither the MGB nor the MGB GT V8 was fitted with a sunroof in standard specification, so deflectors are appropriate for cars that have had aftermarket sunroofs fitted and where the owner wishes to reduce open-sunroof wind noise.
