Midget Steering Column

Suspension & Steering > Steering Column

Two steering column types were used across Midget production, and the distinction is a safety-critical matter. The non-collapsible column, fitted to early UK-specification cars, consists of an inner and outer tube with upper and lower bushes. Several sub-variants exist within this type, distinguished by whether they accept a steering lock and by the column tube diameter. Collapsible Column The collapsible energy-absorbing column was introduced for UK-market cars during the mid-1970s (US-specification cars received a collapsible column from 1968 to meet federal regulations). It is designed to telescope in a frontal impact, reducing the risk of the steering column being pushed rearward into the driver's chest in a collision. The collapsible column is a safety-critical component and must never be modified, repaired, or shortened, any damage requires complete replacement. Column Bushes Column bushes (upper and lower) are wear items on both column types. Worn bushes allow the column to move within its housing, causing vague steering feel, clicking or knocking sounds when turning the wheel, and a perceptible wobble in the steering wheel. Renewing the bushes restores precise steering feel. The column seal prevents water and road debris entering the cabin through the column aperture in the bulkhead, a failed seal allows a persistent draught and dampness on the driver’s side footwell. Steering Lock A steering lock was introduced in July 1971 at GAN5-105501, fitted to the column and secured by shear bolts. These bolts are specifically designed to break off during installation so that a thief cannot easily remove the lock. When replacement is needed, the remaining bolt stubs can be removed by placing a centre punch near the outer edge of the sheared face and striking it at an angle to rotate the stub anticlockwise. Drilling is not recommended as the drill tends to wander into the softer lock casting rather than gripping the bolt.
