Fibreglass front wings offer a substantial weight saving over the standard steel panels and are the choice for competition cars where weight reduction is a priority. A fibreglass wing weighs approximately one-third of the equivalent steel wing, and with two wings fitted, the total weight saving at the front of the car is significant enough to affect the car's handling balance and acceleration.
Finish & Fitment
The wings are supplied in gel coat finish, a smooth white or grey surface that is ready for painting without further preparation beyond a light key with fine abrasive paper and a coat of primer. They are manufactured from the same moulds as the steel panels, so the profile, mounting holes, and flange positions match the car accurately, and the wings bolt on using the same fixings as the steel originals.
Road Use Considerations
Fibreglass wings are not recommended for road-driven cars that may be involved in minor parking impacts, as fibreglass cracks and shatters on impact rather than denting as steel does. They also lack the metallic earth path that steel wings provide for the front lighting, so a separate earth wire must be run to each front lamp when fibreglass wings are fitted. For road cars, steel wings remain the practical choice, while for competition, fibreglass is the standard.
