The MG octagon is the single most recognisable badge on any of the Z-cars, and the front badge (DAH000040WXA) is shared across the MG ZR, ZS and ZT, a rare example of a truly common part across all three cars in the range. It is fitted to the central front grille area on the bonnet leading edge, sized to suit the MG-specific grille bar that distinguishes the Z-cars from their Rover donors. The badge is a moulded plastic backing with a chrome and red enamel face, and over a 20-year ownership cycle the most common failure modes are UV fade of the red enamel, lifting of the chrome edge and adhesive failure where the original double-sided foam tape has perished.
Replacement is straightforward, clean the mounting area thoroughly, peel and apply with the new self-adhesive backing. Identifying the front badge by part number rather than visual match is reliable because the front badge has not changed across pre-facelift or post-facelift cars.
ZR, ZS and ZT Rear Badging
Rear badges are model-specific and trim-specific. The MGOC catalogue covers two ZS rear badge assembly variants (DAB000120 and DAB000180) reflecting the saloon and hatchback versions that mount differently to the bootlid or tailgate. The ZT rear badge (DAH000080MVR) is a single moulded item with the MG octagon on the bootlid plinth alongside the ZT script.
The chrome ZR script badge (DAT000471MMM) is the side or rear chrome lettering, a small but visually important detail on the ZR Trophy and Trophy SE specification. ZR 160 cars carry an additional Rhodium-finish ingot reading "160" alongside the ZR script, which is the most distinctive piece of factory ZR badging and one of the most commonly missing items on cars where the original badge has been knocked off or lost.
Badge Replacement Considerations
Badge replacement is one of the simplest cosmetic restorations on a Z-car and one of the most rewarding visual improvements, particularly on cars where the original chrome has dulled or the enamel has faded. When ordering, the principal information is the car (ZR, ZS or ZT), the position (front, rear or side), the body style (saloon or hatch on the ZS) and the trim level on the ZR. The front MG octagon is the only truly universal item across the range; everything else is model and position specific. Owners replacing a complete badge set should peel and clean carefully, adhesive residue from the original badge can be removed with isopropyl alcohol or a dedicated adhesive remover, but solvent-based products should be tested on an inconspicuous painted area first to avoid damaging the finish.
The MGOC range also extends to MG GT V8 and other classic models for owners running multiple MG cars in a household.
