The MGB front lever arm shock absorber acts as both the damping unit and the upper suspension arm, making it a structurally critical component. Unlike a conventional shock absorber, a worn front unit affects not only ride quality but also wheel geometry and handling accuracy. Front shock absorbers are available in three specifications on exchange: standard reconditioned, uprated reconditioned at approximately 30% stiffer than standard, and quality exchange units which feature rebushed spindle housings, replacement of internal components as required, and a two-year warranty. All exchange units are supplied on a surcharge basis, refunded when the old unit is returned in suitable condition.
Alternatively, the Armstrong damper valve can be replaced without removing the unit using the adjustable valve, allowing the damping rate to be tuned across a range of settings without a full exchange.
Crossmember & Mounting Pads
The front crossmember mounts to the body via four upper and four lower rubber pads with steel clamp plates. These pads deteriorate with age and are often overlooked during restoration, worn pads allow the crossmember to move under load, affecting front suspension geometry and steering feel. Polyurethane lower mounting pads are available as a firmer alternative. The number of mounting bolts differs between chrome bumper (four) and rubber bumper cars (two additional bolts), so hardware must be matched to the car.
The bumpstop kit limits upward wheel travel and prevents metal-to-metal contact at full compression. The upper trunnion fulcrum pin and associated Metalastik trunnion bushes (barrel type, top-hat type) are regular wear items on the MGB’s upper suspension pivot point. Polyurethane top-hat bushes are available in fast road and race specifications for owners seeking reduced compliance.
