The MGB used a Lockheed hydraulic braking system throughout its entire production run, with 10.75-inch diameter discs at the front and twin-piston calipers, a layout that remains entirely capable when correctly maintained and properly specified. One piece of standardisation across the range was that US-type brake pads and linings were fitted to all MGBs from May 1968 onwards, so pad specification is common across all later cars regardless of market. Brake Discs Brake discs are available in original and reproduction specification as individual units or as a pair kit. For owners wanting to improve on the standard setup, uprated options are available across several performance levels. Six-slot grooved discs trap and remove the gas film given off by pad materials under heavy braking, a film that would otherwise reduce friction and cause fade, with the Club grooved kit providing this improvement at accessible cost. EBC slotted and dimpled discs offer maximum braking efficiency for more demanding use. Red Dot slotted discs are available in six and twelve-slot configurations for efficient heat dissipation. Drilled discs deliver maximum cooling benefit under extreme use. Performance brake packages combining discs and pads include the Club performance package pairing six-slot discs with EBC Green Stuff pads, and the EBC X25 kit combining slotted and dimpled discs with Green Stuff pads at 25 per cent increased surface area on both components. For the most significant upgrade available, the exclusive 4-pot vented brake conversion kit, developed by MGOC Spares and sold in their thousands, transforms front brake performance with vented discs and four-piston calipers, available in cast iron and aluminium specifications with a wheel spacer kit for four-stud applications. Calipers Calipers are available as new units in standard and stainless steel piston specifications for both right and left hand sides, and as reconditioned exchange units. The caliper should not be separated into its two halves unless absolutely necessary, if separation is essential, a new bridge seal must be fitted and bridge bolts torqued to the specified 35.5 to 37 lb ft. Caliper seal kits are available in original and reproduction versions. Stainless steel pistons are available individually as a superior corrosion-resistant alternative. Dust covers are available in original black and stainless steel. Brake Pads Standard pads are available in original type, Mintex, and ceramic compound, the ceramic grade being gentle on discs, low in dust, and effective across a wide temperature range. EBC Green Stuff Kevlar pads are available in standard and X25 increased-area dimensions. Red Dot XE and XF Kevlar pads are designed for high-powered road and competition use, with the XF grade stable to 950 degrees Celsius. A combined brake pads and shoes kit supplies a complete car set. Pad retaining pins, retaining springs, anti-squeal shims, and a silver caliper paint kit are all available.
