Manual window winders were fitted throughout the production run, from the original regulators on 3-synchro cars through to the revised type introduced on 4-synchro cars from 1968. Converting to electric operation is one of the most appreciated practical upgrades, particularly for owners who use the car regularly and want to raise or lower a window quickly without removing a glove or reaching across the cabin, and is especially convenient at toll booths, car parks, and when pulling alongside other drivers.
Kit Versions & Components
The conversion kit replaces the manual winder mechanism in both doors with smooth electric operation, controlled by rocker switches mounted in discreet pods that fit directly over the existing winder handle apertures in the door trim, so no new holes are required in the panels and the finished installation looks entirely intentional rather than retrofitted. Two kit versions are available, one for 3-synchro push-button door handle cars from 1965 to 1967, and one for 4-synchro cars from 1968 onwards, reflecting the different door and regulator profiles between the two periods. Each kit comprises a pair of scissor lift regulator mechanisms, switch harnesses, rocker switches, and door mounting pods, and is suitable for Roadster, GT, MGC, and V8 models. The driver's door pod takes a two-switch unit controlling both windows, the passenger pod a single switch.
Power connects to an ignition-live supply and a body earth, keeping the windows inoperative when the ignition is off, and a switch kit is available separately for owners who need replacement switches without the full mechanism.
Installation
Installation requires basic hand tools. The manual mechanism is unbolted and removed through the door access hole, a single mounting hole is drilled using the supplied paper template, and the electric mechanism is manipulated into position with the nylon slides engaging the glass channel. The bolts from the manual mechanism cannot be reused on the electric system as they are not metric. The switch pods are secured through the door trim from behind, and an end stop adjustment is provided to fine-tune glass travel to suit individual door tolerances and the difference in glass travel between Roadster and GT.
The conversion is fully reversible if originality needs to be restored for concours events.
