Brightware > Towbars

Towbars are a small but specific accessory for classic-MG owners who use their car to tow small trailers, typically lightweight luggage trailers, classic-car recovery trailers, bicycle racks, motorbike-rack trailers, or small camping trailers within the modest towing weight limits appropriate to the cars in the range. The towbar provides a secure mechanical mounting point at the rear of the car for the trailer's coupling, with appropriate strength to handle the towing loads, mounting through the chassis structure rather than the bodywork. The cars were not designed with towing in mind, but a correctly engineered towbar makes light towing a practical proposition for a small trailer, a luggage trailer for longer tours where the modest boot capacity runs short, or a trailer for recovery and parts collection. Bolt-On Construction & Specification The standard classic-MG towbar is a bolt-on assembly that mounts to specific structural points on the rear of the car, typically the chassis rails behind the rear axle, with the towbar's mounting brackets bolting through holes in the chassis with appropriate reinforcement plates where needed, designed to spread towing loads into the chassis rails or rear floor panel rather than into less-supported sheet metal. The towbar itself is a steel fabrication with the coupling point at the rear, typically the standard UK 50mm tow ball, positioned at the appropriate height for trailer coupling, painted in black satin finish consistent with the underside of the car, with the ball area chromed or zinc-plated for appearance and corrosion resistance. The towbar installation does not modify the bodywork, bolting to structural points without requiring welding or other permanent changes, and the assembly is engineered specifically for the chosen car's chassis structure, with the rear body structure differing between applications and the towbar pattern matching the car's specification, so chrome-bumper and rubber-bumper variants are stocked as separate specifications because the rubber-bumper cars use the revised structural mounting arrangement introduced from September 1974 on the MGB. The MGC's torquey six-cylinder engine and robust rear axle make it well-suited to light towing duties, while the four-cylinder cars have more modest capacities. Towing Capacity & Practical Limits Classic-MG applications have modest towing capacities by modern standards, the smaller four-cylinder cars having substantial engineering limitations on towing weight and the towbar specifications reflecting these limitations, with the Midget's towing capacity in particular limited by its power and weight so only lightweight trailers should be towed, as heavy loads overwhelm the braking system and stress the rear suspension and drivetrain. Typical maximum trailer weights are in the 250 to 500 kilogram range, suitable for lightweight luggage and small recreational trailers but not for heavy commercial trailers, and the braking capacity should always be considered when selecting a trailer and load. The exact capacity for a specific car should be confirmed against the original-equipment specifications and the structural condition of the car's rear chassis, and towing beyond the appropriate capacity will accelerate wear on the clutch, gearbox, differential, and rear suspension. Rear tyre pressures should be increased to the loaded specification when towing to compensate for tongue weight. Electrical Connection & Installation Kit Trailer towing requires an electrical connection from the car to the trailer for trailer lights, brake lights, indicators, tail lights, and on more substantial trailers a connection for trailer-mounted reversing lights and the trailer's own indicator-monitoring circuit, the standard UK arrangement using a 7-pin or 13-pin connector at the rear of the car with the corresponding plug on the trailer. The wiring extends from the car's existing rear-lighting circuits to the connector through a junction box, with appropriate dropper-resistors or LED-compatible electronics to handle modern trailer lighting and prevent the lower current draw of LED trailer bulbs upsetting the original flasher relay. A dedicated installation kit is available for each towbar, typically supplying the tow ball, chrome and black ball covers, the wiring loom and socket, the relay, and the interior warning light that confirms trailer indicators are operating, as a complete package with nothing left to source separately. For classic MGs, the electrical work is typically the most involved part of the fitment, the towbar itself bolting in place relatively easily, but the wiring requiring careful attention to ensure all trailer functions operate correctly. The technical team is available to advise on the right towbar specification for a specific car and intended use.
