The chrome bumper comprises a chrome-plated or stainless bumper blade spanning the full width of the apron, mounted on brackets bolted to the body structure, with overriders, the protruding guards at each end, absorbing minor parking impacts. The MGC was only ever produced with chrome bumpers, predating the rubber bumper era by several years, so there is no rubber bumper complication to consider, and its bumpers are the same as the contemporary MGB Mark II of the 1967 to 1969 period. On the MGB, chrome bumpers were used from 1962 to September 1974, with overriders evolving from a smaller front chrome style to 1969 to the later rubber-padded type introduced from 1970, so getting the correct overrider type for the year matters on a car presented to period-correct specification. Bumper blades develop pitting over time, particularly along the top edge where stone chips break through the chrome layer, and while rechroming is possible it is expensive, so new replacement blades are typically more cost-effective.
Stainless Steel Bumper Sets
High quality replacement bumpers in stainless steel are available as a durable alternative to replated chrome, supplied as complete front and rear sets with or without overriders. The stainless set with overriders is available in two variants, the 1962 to 1970 specification and the 1970 onwards rubber pad overrider specification, while a set without overriders is available for owners who prefer the cleaner look. Stainless steel backings are available for chrome bumper, rubber bumper, and 1975-specific applications, with a back plate fitting kit for both chrome and rubber bumper cars.
Overriders, Irons & Fixings
Individual chrome overriders are available for front and rear positions across the production periods, with rubber pad overrider reproductions for front and rear, and the rear overriders are a particularly common replacement item as they protrude beyond the body line and are vulnerable to damage when reversing. Overrider seals, rubber pads, and the special overrider bolt are available individually, with stainless steel bumper fillers closing the gap between the bumper and the body. Bumper irons, corner brackets, bumper springs, and all associated fixings are available for both front and rear installation, with bumper bolts in chrome and stainless steel finish. Front and rear bumper fitting kits supply the correct hardware for a complete installation, and all bumper mounting brackets and bolt holes should be checked for corrosion and elongation whenever bumpers are removed, as weakened mountings reduce the bumper's ability to protect the bodywork.
