A stainless steel number plate backing frames the number plate against the body, giving a clean and finished appearance at the front and rear of the car. The area behind the number plate is constantly exposed to road spray, salt, and trapped moisture, conditions that rapidly corrode standard mild steel backings and cause unsightly rust staining to run down the rear panel beneath the plate, and on many surviving cars the number plate backing is one of the first items to corrode through, with the rust it generates spreading to surrounding body panels. Stainless backings eliminate this problem entirely, maintaining their appearance indefinitely with no maintenance.
Fitment & Specifications
On the MGB, the number plate mounting arrangement changed across the production run. Chrome bumper cars mounted the rear number plate lamps on the bumper overriders from 1962 to 1973, with the lamps resited to the bumper blade itself for 1974 only, and rubber bumper cars from September 1974 used a different front and rear mounting arrangement integrated into the bumper structure. Stainless number plate backings are available for both chrome bumper and rubber bumper specifications, with a separate 1975-specific version also available, and for the MGC at front and rear. The mirror-polished finish complements the car's bumpers, overriders, and exterior finishers, and the material requires no maintenance.
