The MGB floor covering arrangement evolved significantly across the production run. From the outset in 1962, the cabin used a combination of PVC-coated rubber mats on the actual floor panels, in two sections per side, with shaped carpet covering the transmission tunnel, heelboard, and rear shelf. The sills were also rubber-covered. This mixed arrangement of rubber mats and carpet continued until the 1977 model year, when full carpeting, covering the floor panels and sills as well as the tunnel, heelboard, and rear shelf, was standardised across all cars.
The 1975 Jubilee GT was the first MGB to receive full carpeting, ahead of the general changeover. The carpet material itself changed during production.
Early cars used Firth’s loop-pile, which was changed to the same manufacturer’s cut-pile from the 1972 model year. In October 1977, the carpet quality was temporarily changed to Astrakhan before reverting to Firth’s cut-pile after about a year. Carpet colour always matched the main interior trim, so it could be black, red, or blue on early cars, expanding through navy, autumn leaf, ochre, and beige across the production run. From the 1977 model year, carpets on RHD cars were always black.
On LHD roadsters with coloured trim, the front compartment carpet was black but the heelboard and rear shelf carpet matched the seat colour, Autumn Leaf on Autumn Leaf cars, Chestnut on beige-trimmed cars.
Carpet Sets
Tailored carpet sets cover all visible floor areas in a single purchase, with moulded rear wheel arch sections and a pre-shaped transmission tunnel section. The primary distinction when ordering is between 3-synchro cars to 1967 and 4-synchro cars from 1968 onwards, the transmission tunnel was enlarged with the introduction of the 4-synchro gearbox, and the carpet profile differs accordingly. 3-synchro cars require the original rubber heel pad, which is not included in the carpet set. Bonded soundproofing material is included on all carpet pieces, addressing road and transmission noise at the same time, a practical benefit given that the original factory insulation was minimal. Full carpet sets are available for the MGB Roadster and GT, with MGC-specific sets also available.
GT rear carpet supplements cover the rear cabin area separately. A boot carpet set covers the Roadster boot floor and spare wheel area.
