The original MGB floor covering used PVC-coated rubber mats on the floor panels, in two sections per side of the transmission tunnel, with a heelmat pattern in both footwells, the heelmats always black regardless of the main trim colour. In June 1963, the front floor mats were modified to allow their removal with the seat runners in the maximum forward position, and in December 1965 the shade of red for floor mats was changed. Full carpeting replaced the rubber mat and carpet combination from the 1977 model year, but footwell mats remain the simplest and most effective way to protect the carpet on any retrimmed car, taking the daily wear from feet and heels and keeping the underlying carpet in the condition it was fitted in.
Mats & Covers
Carpet footwell mats are available in a range of colours with piping options, tailored to the MGB floor profile for a correct fit without shifting under the pedals. Rubber mats are available separately for 3-synchro and 4-synchro cars, as the tunnel and floor profile differs between the two, the tunnel having been enlarged with the introduction of the 4-synchro gearbox in late 1967, so a 4-synchro mat will not fit a 3-synchro floor correctly. Spare wheel covers protect the boot floor carpet from the spare wheel and any road dirt or moisture it carries, the spare wheel usually being stored so that the outside faced upwards, except on disc-wheeled cars to 1969 where the storage orientation differed.
