The MGB dashboard changed at five distinct points across the production run. The 1962 to 1968 car used a simple painted metal panel with a central instrument layout and toggle switches, the 1968 to 1971 MkII introduced a revised layout with a pull light switch though toggle switches were retained on home market cars, the comprehensive 1972 interior revision brought a padded dashboard with glovebox and face-level ventilation, the 1974 to 1975 specification followed, and the 1976-onwards rubber bumper car used the final type with illuminated rocker switches and a revised instrument binnacle in dark Trinite covering. Each of these is a physically different panel, and the veneer overlay must match the correct dashboard profile.
Construction & Finish
Veneer dashboards are hand-crafted in the UK from sustainably sourced hardwood veneer, with each piece selected for colour and figuring before being bonded to a solid backing for stability. The veneer is hand-polished to develop the natural colour of the wood before a multi-lacquer finish is applied for protection and depth. The result is a dashboard overlay that fits over the existing panel using pre-drilled mounting holes with screws provided, making installation straightforward without requiring removal of the original dash.
Options & Coordination
Four production periods are covered, up to 1971, 1971 to 1974, 1974 to 1975, and 1976 onwards, with both RHD and LHD versions available. Timber options are burr walnut, burr elm, and black stained burr walnut, with carbon fibre also available for owners who want a more contemporary finish while retaining the overlay fitting method, the carbon fibre using a polymer lacquer surface that creates depth and sheen through the laminated weave. The effect is particularly striking when coordinated with matching veneer door cappings and console panels, transforming the cabin from a functional 1970s interior into something considerably more refined, and five-piece matching sets covering the dashboard, glovebox lid, and instrument panel are available as a complete package.
