Interior > Seatbelt Guides & Covers

Seatbelt guides and covers are the supporting components that complete a properly-finished seatbelt installation. The webbing of an inertia-reel belt needs to be guided cleanly from the reel through the cabin to the occupant, the anchor points where the webbing attaches to the bodywork need to be finished visually, and the buckle and lower anchor mountings benefit from decorative covers that conceal the functional hardware behind a tidy finished appearance. On the sports cars in the range the belt geometry matters for comfort as well as appearance, as a belt that sits awkwardly across the shoulder, pulling against the neck or falling out of reach, is a constant irritation, and the guides address this directly by locating the belt correctly over the shoulder. Upper Guides & Height Adjusters The upper guide routes the webbing of an inertia-reel belt from the reel over the occupant's shoulder to the buckle position, typically mounted on the rear bulkhead or the inner B-pillar depending on the specific car, at a height that places the diagonal portion of the belt across the occupant's chest at the correct angle rather than across the neck. On the earlier cars the guide is a fixed roller, a moulded block with an internal roller that the webbing passes through smoothly without binding or chafing, important for the belt to operate correctly during normal use, with tired or worn guides causing the webbing to catch or jam. On the MGB, dedicated anodised aluminium guides carrying an MG motif locate the belt correctly over the shoulder to prevent chafing and keep the belt within easy reach, supplied as a centre-post pair for single-post or eared headrests and as a two-post kit for twin-post sports recliner seats, the correct version depending on the headrest type fitted. On the later cars in the range a height adjuster allows the upper guide point to be raised or lowered to suit the occupant's shoulder height, a sliding mechanism on the B-pillar that should move freely, with stiff or seized adjusters freed and lubricated rather than left at an incorrect height. Comfort Pads & Clips Seatbelt comfort pads carrying the MG logo are a comfort improvement particularly for static belts and multi-point harnesses, where the webbing width bears directly on the shoulder without the give of an inertia-reel mechanism, the pad spreading the load and softening the contact. Comfort clips are suitable for inertia-reel belts and relieve belt tension while still allowing movement without re-adjusting, in a sports car particularly preventing the belt from rubbing against the neck during driving, a small addition that meaningfully improves comfort on a long journey. Both items address the reality that the seatbelt geometry on these cars, designed decades ago and often retrofitted to earlier cars using the original static-belt mounting positions, does not always place the belt comfortably for every occupant. Anchor & Buckle Covers, Application The anchor and buckle covers are the decorative items that finish the visible hardware, the lower anchor cover fitting over the floor-mounted anchor bolt and metal plate where the webbing connects to the floor, concealing the functional hardware behind a moulded cover that matches the interior trim colour, the buckle cover providing a tidy finished appearance and protecting the buckle mechanism from dust and contamination, and the upper anchor cover finishing the upper mounting where present. Each cover is colour-matched to the standard interior trim colours, typically black for most applications with appropriate alternatives for non-black interiors. Guides and covers are stocked in the patterns appropriate to each application across the range, the chrome-bumper and rubber-bumper variants using slightly different patterns reflecting production-year differences and the modern cars using their own arrangements, and the components are typically renewed during interior restoration work as the originals age cosmetically over decades of service. On the modern cars the seatbelt specification changed at several VIN breakpoints with variants interfacing with the pre-tensioner and airbag system, so for complete belt assemblies on those cars the VIN distinctions are critical when ordering, an incorrect belt potentially not interfacing correctly with the safety system, while the guides and covers themselves are more universal. The technical team is available to advise on the right specification for a specific car and seatbelt configuration.
