Wheel Cleaners

Wheel cleaning is one of the more demanding cleaning tasks on any classic MG, as the wheels accumulate brake dust, road grime, tyre-wear residue, and other contaminants that road use produces, and the right cleaning approach matters substantially. The wrong cleaner on the wrong wheel can cause permanent damage, etching chrome, attacking aluminium, lifting paint, so the appropriate product must be matched to the wheel type. A reactive wheel cleaner effective across all wheel types chemically dissolves the iron-oxide content of brake dust, producing a visible colour-change reaction that indicates the cleaner is working, sprayed on, left for two to three minutes, then rinsed off thoroughly, available in spray bottles for single-car home use and larger containers for frequent or workshop use. Chrome Wire Wheels Chrome wire wheels are the most demanding wheel type to clean, as every spoke is a separate cleaning surface and every nipple and spoke crossing is a potential trap for accumulated dirt and brake dust, while the chrome finish itself is vulnerable to aggressive acidic cleaners. The right product is a pH-neutral or mildly-alkaline cleaner that strips brake dust and road grime without attacking the chrome plating, sprayed to penetrate between the spokes and worked in with a soft long-bristled wire-wheel brush before a thorough rinse. Aggressive acidic cleaners popular for modern alloy wheels must never be used on chrome wires, as the acid will etch the plating and cause permanent surface damage, and brake dust left between the spokes is corrosive and will pit the chrome over time if not removed regularly, so on chrome wires a follow-up application of a chrome protector after cleaning guards against the pitting that develops when moisture sits on unprotected chrome. Alloy & Painted Wheels Polished alloy wheels, where the wheel face is bare polished aluminium without a clear-coat, are vulnerable to attack from aggressive acidic cleaners, which etch the surface and cause permanent dulling, so a pH-neutral cleaner used with a soft brush or sponge is the right choice. Lacquered and clear-coated alloy wheels, including the factory wheels of the MGF and TF, are more forgiving but the clear-coat can still be attacked by aggressive cleaners over repeated application, so a milder cleaner used regularly is better than an aggressive cleaner used occasionally, with a dedicated soft-bristle wheel brush reaching into the spoke gaps without scratching the finish. Painted steel wheels, including Rostyle wheels with their distinctive two-tone finish, tolerate a broader range of products, the principal concern being brake-dust accumulation rather than wheel damage, with a non-abrasive formula used to avoid dulling or scratching the paint. Brake Dust & Wheel Sealant Regular cleaning prevents brake dust from baking into the wheel finish under the heat of normal braking, where it becomes very difficult to remove without aggressive treatment, so freshly deposited dust that washes off easily is far preferable to dust that has been baked on by repeated heat cycles. After cleaning, a wheel sealant or wax provides a protective barrier that makes subsequent cleaning easier by preventing brake dust and road film from bonding directly to the wheel surface, with sealants designed for alloy wheels being more heat-resistant than standard car wax, which matters given the proximity of the wheel surface to the brake disc, and is especially worthwhile on cars with higher-output braking such as the AP Racing four-pot calipers fitted to some MGF and TF variants, where brake dust production is higher than on standard brakes.
