Paint & Rust Protection > Body & Engine Paint

This section covers the consumable paint products used for touch-up work, panel repairs, and complete refinishing on classic MGs, in both spray-aerosol and tin presentations that suit different scales of work. The range is offered in 400ml aerosol cans, covering approximately one square metre per can, and 50ml touch-up bottles for the smaller stone-chip and scratch repairs, with larger tin presentations for full-panel work. The colour codes match the original BMC, BL, and Rover paint codes used during production, allowing an owner or workshop to refresh a panel, a door shut, or a complete bodyshell to a finish that matches the rest of the car. Body Paint Aerosol paint is the right product for touch-up work, a stone chip on the leading edge of the bonnet, a small scratch on a door, or the colour-coding of a door shut where conventional spray equipment cannot reach cleanly, allowing precise application without the setup of a compressor, gun, and booth, while tin paint is supplied in the volumes needed for full panel and bodyshell refinishing through spray equipment in a workshop environment. The correct colour should be confirmed against the car's original specification before ordering, using the chassis-plate colour code, the heritage certificate from the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust, or the relevant MG model register, as colour accuracy is important for a professional result, particularly on visible panels where a mismatched repair is conspicuous and on metallic and pearlescent finishes where visual matching alone produces a poor result. Where the original colour is uncertain on a repainted car, traces of the factory finish can often be found under trim fixings, beneath door seal channels, or inside the boot where the original paint was protected from weathering. Engine Paint Synthetic engine enamel is formulated specifically to withstand the operating temperatures of a classic engine without lifting, blistering, or discolouring, and is supplied in the original MG engine colours, Black, Red, BMC Green, and MGC Green, for refinishing the block, head, and ancillaries during a rebuild. The correct colour varies by model and period, the early MGB engines being finished in dark red or maroon from 1962 until the 18V-series engine of 1971, after which they were painted black to the end of production, while the MGC engine is finished in the distinctive MGC Green, a pale silver-grey-green continuing the Austin-Healey tradition that is distinctly lighter than BMC Green, with using BMC Green on an MGC engine being one of the most common restoration errors and immediately noticeable to a knowledgeable eye. Engine paint is applied to a clean, degreased, lightly-abraded, and primed surface in multiple thin coats, the work typically done during a rebuild when the block is bare, and the paint cures fully at the engine's operating temperature, so a few cycles of running to working temperature are needed before it reaches full hardness. Exhaust & Chassis Paint High-temperature exhaust paint is available in silver, black, white, and red for refinishing manifolds, downpipes, and system components that operate at significantly higher temperatures than the engine block itself, as standard engine paint is not suitable for exhaust components and will burn off rapidly. Chassis and underbody paints provide corrosion protection for the structural components, suspension mounting points, and underfloor areas exposed to road spray, salt, and moisture, and a properly prepared and painted underside not only preserves the bodyshell but makes future maintenance and inspection easier, as oil leaks and fluid seepage show up clearly against a clean painted surface. The associated primers, undercoats, and lacquers that complete the paint system are covered separately under Primers, Undercoats & Lacquer.
